【IHTP】I Hate This Place News

This World: NEA Eco Music Challenge

I have a love-hate relationship with music that has a cause. On one hand, songs are a great way to get important messages out there. But at the same time, because the message needs to be clear and unambiguous it's tough to avoid lyrical cliches and keep the corniness at bay.
So my ears perked up when I heard about Singapore's Eco Music Challenge. The premise is simple: write a song that carries an environmental message and encourages people to live more sustainably. I got together with friends Gayle (one of Singapore Idol's finalists), Roman (who is an awesome guitarist and is featured heavily on IHTP's stuff), and we put together a song called This World.
I think we did a decent job of creating a good "low cheese" environmental song, but don't take my word for it -- have a listen to it here! （链接在下一楼～） And if you happen to be a resident of Singapore, give us a little click on that Like button -- it'll help our standing in the contest.

It's funny to think about the relationship that humans have with the Earth. We are so dependent on our planet, but through our ignorance, greed, and insensitivity we are killing off the very thing that gives us life. The message of this song is one that has been said many times through the ages, but it bears repeating: This world is all we've got. If we don't start taking this idea seriously and live in a more sustainable way, there will be nothing left for our future and the future of our children.

Shiny One EP is out now!
Hi everyone!
I'm so happy to announce that after 9 long months, the new I Hate This Place album , Shiny One EP, is now available on iTunes and several other download sites on the net!!
This is newer territory for me. There's a lot more energy, maybe a bit more of an edge to the songs on this album. If you're a fan of "She's Space Invader" or "Falling For" I think you'll feel right at home. In the coming days I'll be posting some of the tracks so you can listen for yourself.
My thanks to Ryan Geller for mastering the album and co-producing/mixing "All That's In Between" with me, to Roman Tarassov for his guitar work on "Shiny One", Hiromi Okano for her awesome cover art, and to Renee, whose Stylophone, besides the drums, is the only instrument used on "Mudskipping" :) To everyone else, and to IHTP fans far and wide, thanks for all your support in music and life -- I promise it couldn't have been done without you!

Mini Interview With I Hate This Place

Hey everyone! xDoopliss recently asked me a bunch of questions for a school project. You might find it interesting if you'd like to find out more about the method behind the madness of I Hate This Place :)
How did you come up with the name I Hate This Place for yourself?
Haha that's usually one of the more popular questions :) I was in Denver in 2004 when I started the project and came up with the name I Hate This Place. It wasn't a reaction to the city (Denver is lovely!), but more to the way I was feeling at the time. I was living on my own for the first time and was pretty down. The idea was that throwing my energy into doing music would help. And it worked! Kinda haha.
Did you have it planned out that you were going to become a musician, or did it happen naturally/by luck?
I've always been really interested in music. I started taking piano lessons when I was 4 and became interested in electronic music, songwriting, and recording pretty early on. I guess the thing that I wasn't expecting was for people to actually like what I do. That's really inspired me to carry on and keep working on I Hate This Place and my other projects.
How did you decide what genre of music to create?
Being a keyboard player, I've always been interested in electronic music. When I started IHTP I didn't know a lot of people in the area, so getting a band together wasn't really an option. I needed something that I could do by myself "in the box"... At the time, Give Up by The Postal Service was on heavy rotation on my iTunes, and it was a really big inspiration for me, as well as a lot of other artists, I think.
What do you do if a writer's block comes up for lyrics?
Sometimes it's tricky coming up with lyrics! When I get stuck, I may just sit down and force myself to hack through it. But usually I find the best way is to leave the lyrics be for awhile -- work on another part of the song or step away from the track entirely. That way I can come back fresh later, and at that point new ideas will have emerged and it'll be much easier to get back on track.
If you could have any super power, what would it be & why?
Lol. I think it'd be cool to be able to stop the clock but still be able to move around. That would essentially give me teleportation, unlimited time to learn and think about things, and immortality if I really wanted it. Not bad tools for fighting crime :)
