Cui Jian, widely considered China's "Father of Rock", held a long-awaited solo concert in Beijing's Capital Stadium recently. His last Beijing concert twelve years ago was said to have led Chinese rock into a new era.
Now, more than a decade later, the rock star still isn't satisfied with the development of the rock scene here, but his comeback concert certainly proved hugely popular.
Well, in some ways, the concert did achieve the impossible - by igniting the stadium from the very first note. Many fans stayed on their feet during the entire two-and-half-hour long show.
The 40-year-old rock star hardly seems to have aged at all. Apart from supporting many rock music festivals and leading the anti-lip-synching campaign, Cui Jian still maintains that unique outspoken character which has brought him so many fans, as well as enemies.
As the much venerated "Father of Chinese Rock", Cui Jian's opinion of the rock scene right now is of course very important. However he seems neither hugely optimistic nor particularly pessimistic on the future of Chinese Rock.
"China's rock music scene right now is just so-so. Not too bad, and not too good. It was kind of born out of nowhere, gradually got more exposure, and is JUST starting to move upward."
Although Cui Jian tried adding a few new elements into the concert - singing two new songs from his latest album - it was still, of course, the old classic numbers that drove the fans crazy.
"Cui Jian is still as young as before!"
"I've not been to Beijing for 30 years. It is because of Cui Jian that I come here again."
"I'm from the same generation as Cui Jian. I feel in many ways we think the same. His songs expressed the common experience we used to have."
