Walter Perazzo: Argentina can win the Under-20 World Cup
Argentina Under-20 coach Walter Perazzo was thrilled with his side's 3-0 demolition of North Korea to secure qualification for the World Cup knockout stages, and affirmed that his youngsters were out to win the competition.
Goals from Facundo Ferreyra, Lucas Villafanez and Ezequiel Cirigliano assured victory for the Argentines, who even without Roma starlet Erik Lamela - resting an ankle knock - were able to pass through to the last 16 in Colombia at the head of Group F.
Mexico also qualify from the group in second place, while Brian Eastick's England will have to wait and see if they can secure a best third-place spot depending on other results.
Speaking to reporters after Thursday night's match, Perazzo revealed that he was delighted with the effort of his charges, who are yet to concede a goal in the tournament.
"The first objective is complete. We won the 'Group of Death' and we will stay in Medellin. We played two champions and one European qualifier and we came first in the group with zero goals conceded," the coach explained, before praising his defence.
"Argentina are a very solid team from the halfway line back. In truth, we are very strong in defence."
Perazzo's future has been called into question since senior coach Sergio Batista was fired last week, with many expecting the U-20 guru to leave his post following the tournament. The Colombian-born trainer, however, showed himself completely focused on taking the World Cup to Argentina for the first time since 2007.
"We have beaten rivals of a very good standard. I have the highest expectations because I have a balanced team here, both those who are playing and those on the sidelines. There is not much between them and that is crucial, because we must try and win this title and we are on the right track," he concluded.
Argentina will meet Egypt in the second round, and can expect a tough clash on August 9 from the team which finished second on goal difference to South American champions Brazil.
