这部电影剧情描绘了二对母女之间相处的故事，罗拉（Lana Turner饰）与女儿苏西这对白人母女之间，因为母亲专注於事业与女儿缺乏沟通，之後又意外同时爱上同一个男人的悲剧；她们在海边遇到的另一对黑人母女也有著自家难念的经，安妮（Dan O'Herlihy饰）因为拥有一半黑人血统的女儿，而女儿始终无法接纳自己也是黑人的事实而悲伤矛盾，但是安妮这个善良的母亲，始终不放弃等待女儿的醒悟，只是最终仍以子欲养而亲不待写下了遗憾的结局。

我个人对前叙的白人母女倒是没什麼感觉，无非是有钱人忙於事业，疏於管教，宠坏了自己的女儿而已，自己也没尽到母亲应尽的责任，後果也是咎由自取；倒是那黑人母亲的际遇就让人相当同情，年轻时被白人主人强暴生下女儿，承受了当时文化普遍存在的歧视，独自抚养女儿长大，非但任劳任怨，还同时隐忍著女儿在成长中因自我否定所生的叛逆，然而她却始终以母亲的慈爱全部包容下来，直到临终都不曾对一切有所怨尤，只是当孩子的无法体会，也听不进慈母的规劝而依然故我，剧情结尾以Mahalia Jackson在教堂的追思仪式中唱出了主题曲Trouble Of The World，最後紧随著电影的情节与女儿迟来的悔恨，凄凉的歌声道尽了慈母的爱与遗憾，真是令人感动到落泪。
