Christina Aguilera, Tony Lucca Feud: Was the Singer Secretly in Love With Her Co-Star Turned 'Voice' Nemesis?
The big story from "The Voice"s finale last night (May 8) was that Jermaine Paul was crowned this season's big winner. However, throughout the entire season of the show, the even bigger story has been the strange and bitter feud between mentor Christina Aguilera and contestant Tony Lucca. For those unfamiliar with the back story, Christina and Tony starred together as kids on "The Mickey Mouse Club." However, when Lucca came to audition for "The Voice," Aguilera acted as though she didn't recognize him.
But that was just the start of the strangeness between the former costars. As the season progressed, Christina became more and more critical of Tony, calling him out on numerous occasions with downright rude comments. At first, Lucca took the harsh words in stride, but finally snapped back, telling PEOPLE Magazine: "I'm not going to let one person bring me down. Clearly that see***ike part of her strategy."
So what gives -- why did Christina seem to have it out for Tony this entire season? According to another former co-star from their "Mickey Mouse Club" days, it may all stem from an unrequited teen crush! Dale Godboldo, who co-starred with Tony and Christina on the show in the '90s, tells TMZ that Aguilera was actually smitten with Lucca back in the day. "Christina was in love with him," reveals Dale. But she wasn't the only one. "Britney was in love with him," added Godboldo, referencing other "MMC" star, Britney Spears.
However, despite the original crush on Aguilera's part, nothing ever came of it, leading Aguilera to hold a grudge against her former object of affection. At least according to Godboldo. "All of this ["Voice"] madness was not brought on by Tony," Dale tells TMZ.
Whether or not Aguilera's bitterness was the cause of the season-long feud, it appears the singer is trying to mend fences with Lucca. During the end of last night's finale, audiences saw Christina whispering sweetly in Tony's ear. "She just wanted to clear the air a bit," Lucca, explained to Us Weekly. "[She] apologize[d] that this became much more of a dramatic thing than she ever intended it. I said to her, 'I hope that we can be cool moving forward. I take pride in the fact that my whole career has been a career of integrity, and sound relationships."
