When you give your evidence to the Think Tank ,are you going to support my view that the Civil Service is over manned and feather_bedded,or not?Yes or no?Straight answer.
Sir Humphrey(PERMANENT UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE AND HEAD OF THE DAA)：
Well minister，if you ask me for a straight answer ，then I shall say that，as far as we can see,looking at it by and large,taking one thing with another in terms of the average of departments ,then in the final analysis it is probably true to say,that at the end of the day,in general terms,you would probably find that,not to put too fine a point on it,there probably was not very much in it one way or the other,as far as one can see ,at this stage.

哈克：汉弗莱，坐下……我明白地问，你可以明白地回答我吗？
汉弗莱：好吧，大臣，只要你不要求我诉诸简单粗拙或大而化之的概括，比如“是”或者“不是”，我将尽全力服从。
哈克：……意思是“是”？
汉弗莱：……是的
哈克：……好的，问题来了……
汉弗莱：噢，我还以为刚才那个就是你想问的问题呢。
哈克：你给研究所的证词，会不会支持我的观点，说公务员严重超编？“是”或“不是”？讲明白！
汉弗莱：大臣，如果你一定要我明白地说明的话，那么我只能说，就目前情况，综观全局，纵览古今，考虑各部门平均水平，分析总结，或许可以认为，综上所述，概括说来，您很可能发现，尽管可能忠言逆耳，无论如何，这件事恐怕前景微妙。如今之势，只能作如此预期。
哈克：……你说“是”还是“不是”？
汉弗莱：“是”，也“不是”。
哈克：如果我不要你明白回答呢？
汉弗莱：我会尽量争取时间说明，大臣。
James Hacker：Humphrey，sit down...Will you give me a straight answer to a straight question？
Humphrey：Oh well,Minister,as long as you are not asking me to resort to crude generalization sand vulgar over simplifications,suah as a simple"yes"or"no",I shall do my utmost to oblige.
James Hacker：...is that "yes"?
Humphrey：......yes.
James Hacker：Right.Here is the straight question...
Humphrey：Oh I thought that was it.
