I’m so sorry to hear about Nini2. His case is very weird so I’m not sure what is going on. I think a brain tumor is unlikely… he probably can’t walk because he is so anemic. Did they say how low his count was? If they were thinking brain tumor, based on his physical exam findings, an MRI would be the better test instead of a CT. Brain tumors in this age of cat are very unusual. What I can’t explain is why he is so anemic again. We tested him last time for two viral diseases (FeLV and FIV) and he was negative for both. We also tested him for 3 different species of Mycoplasma (a RBC parasite) that can cause anemia in cats and they all came back negative. Last time he was anemic, he seemed to recover very quickly without any treatment. After discussing the case with one of our internal medicine specialists, the thought is that he either has one of the Mycoplasma species in his blood and the previous test didn’t catch it or there is something bad going on in his bone marrow (where RBCs are made). The recommendation would be to retest him for the Mycoplasma organisms and retest his reticulocyte count to see how the bone marrow is responding. If the bone marrow is working, the reticulocyte count should be pretty high. If the other hospital needs our records, have your friends tell them to call us and we can fax the records to them. I’m so sorry this happened, especially while you are out of town. Hang in there and let me know what I can do to help.
