Did Maria Sharapova go too far in celebrating win over Venus Williams?
(标题:玛莎在赢得对大威的比赛后庆祝方式是否太过分了?)
The hotly anticipated Australian Open match between Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams was a snoozer, and not just because it started at 3 a.m. on the East Coast. Sharapova broke Venus in her first two service games, won the first set 6-1 and cruised to an easy victory in straights.
It was a routine third-round win for Sharapova over an aging opponent she had a winning record against. So why did the Russian tennis star celebrate like she won a Grand Slam title?
Sharapova let out a loud shriek and thrust her fists in the air on match point, then bent over at her knees to shout again while making her way to the net. To watch it, you'd think she just endured a marathon win.
Jon Scott of Tennis.com says the conduct was 'unbecoming a champ."
It's true that a 6-1, 6-3 match that was basically over at 4-0 in the first wouldn't normally draw such celebration, unless it happened in a major final. A cathartic release at the end of a back-and-forth match — think Novak Djokovic in last year's Australian Open — is understandable. Yelling after a third-rounder that was never much in question?
Still others have said on Twitter that Sharapova's celebration was a sign of respect for Venus.
I tend to think Sharapova was equating beating Venus with beating Serena, the Williams sister she's always had trouble with. Without getting too much into armchair psychology, Sharapova reacted as if in order to slay Serena, she first had to get Venus. Never mind that beating the older sister hasn't been an issue.
虽然玛莎赛后有解释,但显然媒体对这件事的印象真的不太好。
