Elliott Smith生前最后一张专辑《From a Basement on the Hill》将在今年10月19日由ANTI-唱片公司发行。这张专辑是Elliott Smith在去年秋天他身亡之前创作完成的。

　　《From a Basement on the Hill》是在Elliott录制1998年专辑《XO》和2000年专辑《Figure 8》的录音棚录制成型的。

From a Basement on the Hill之前，Elliot Smith一直希望能在音乐风格上做些新的尝试，因此他很用心的做着音乐，然而音乐没有录制完成，他却已走到了生命的尽头。可以说From a Basement on the Hill就成了当时他最后的心路历程的记事本。就象专集名称，From a Basement on the Hill来自地狱的地层。那是一次多么璀璨而又矛盾激烈的心灵与音乐间的激烈碰撞与挣扎啊！在那首我们最少熟悉的单曲Twilight （黄昏）中，Elliot平静而又忧伤的歌声，伴随着背景蜂鸣箱发出的嗡嗡的音乐效果（夏日的虫鸣声？），他早已化成了一只萤火虫，飞向了他期待中的黑夜。只留下听歌的人，不由的噤然泪下。要说Elliot在这张专集中的一些乐风的改变最大的，也就是更多的运用了电声的效果，象开首的Coast to Coast 和Don't Go Down ，失真而粗糙的LOW-FI吉他效果与他忧伤低雕的吟唱行成了强烈的对比，这种摇滚味道应该是在他以往的音乐印象中也是比较少见的（据说他早年就是玩纯硬摇滚的说），而我个人更欣赏和喜欢的，他的那种只用一把吉他，加上他不施修饰的简单吟唱的音乐作品在该专集中的Fond Farewell （亲爱的告别）中还是得到了完美体现，在这首可以媲美Miss Misery 的动人情歌中，带着淡淡忧伤，向心爱的人做最后的祝福，忧愁却又不失幻想和希望，让人感动不已。由于专集特别请来与Elliott Smith合作多年的老搭档制作人Rob Schnapf以及Elliott Smith的前女友，同时也是The Jicks合唱团的贝斯手Joanna Bolme来为Elliott Smith留下来的录音做修饰与制作的工作。所以在这些音乐中不难发现到，他的朋友和亲人对他的怀念之情。特别在Little One 中，他与Joanna Bolme的一唱一合真情演绎，生前的爱恋缠绵又在他们各自的心中点燃了火焰。
