FITNESS Zone and KFC have joined the smartphone application bandwagon with the development of apps that are aimed to engage customers in a different platform.
KFC is expected to launch its iPhone app, developed by local app developer Infindo Technology, next week, while Fitness Zone will be launching its iPad app at its Kiulap branch today.
Del Goh, general manager of KFC Brunei, said the app would be the fastfood chain's introduction to the platform as it explores more ways to use it.
"The starting point will be for customers to give feedback to KFC, and it has the ability to make reservations for birthday parties at their outlets," said Goh.
He also said that other features include a news section which will allow customers to receive the latest news from KFC, as well as a branch locator.
Fitness Zone's smartphone app, meanwhile, is a partnership between the gym operator and mobile app developer MeSixty.
said Keeran Janin, MeSixty chief executive officer, said that the partnership came about after discussions with Fitness Zone owner Wu Zhun. Janin said that Wu Zhun wanted an app that not only promoted the gym, but also fitness.
The Fitness Zone app has a feature for members to check the schedules of their classes.

"What stands out about the app is the high quality photos and videos that we use," said Janin, on the starting point of the app.
Janin noted that apps are now becoming the new websites for companies.
"People nowadays are carrying tablets and smartphones everywhere, and for someone who is on the go and just wants to check something, the app is the quickest and simplest way for them to get the information," he said.
Noting that smartphones are getting more and more prevalent, Goh said KFC, which is currently the first fast food chain in Brunei to tap into this market, found the development of an app to be the "next logical step".
"In Brunei more than 90 per cent of people in Brunei have a mobile phone and the majority of them have smartphones, so the next logical step for us was to develop an app," he said.
Although the features of the app may be basic, Goh said that there are a lot of other things that the company wants to do with it in the future.
"The next step might be with QR codes, but we will wait and see first," he said.
