Kele Goodwin – Hymns
There are things we build to tear down
We know, but still ask ourselves, "Why
Did we build a shelter of ice
In a desert so hot and dry?"
There are seeds we plant then deny our love
But secretly pray for rain
And when the sprouts grow up through the snow,
We feel only shame
It's the hymns we lost when we were young
That we now search for beneath the sun
It's the prayers of our mothers to keep us safe from the sea
That swallows the children that swim too deep
There are sails meant never to raise
Never to know the winds
Leaving our ship alone and adrift
Thinking only of where it has been
There's a place I'm trying to get to
It's right in front of me
There's a line on your body
Where the horizon meets the sea
It's the hymns we lost when we were young
That we now search for beneath the sun
It's the prayers of our mothers to keep us safe from the sea
That swallows the children that swim too deep

    Kele Goodwin – Snow
    Will you stay?
    Will you go?
Can you see through the snow?
    Do you bleed?
    Have I run dry?
From where you stand can you see the sky?
    Where have you been?
Is your heart on the mend?
    Have you made new friends?
    Do you love again?
    Did your leaves fall?
    Will they now grow?
Can you see through the snow?
    Do you live?
    Did I die?
From where you stand can you see the sky?
    Where have you been?
Is your heart on the mend?
    Have you made new friends?
    Do you love again?

Kele Goodwin – A Kiss for Your Eyes
      Everything sparkles
if you just give it a chance
      Everyone, big or small,
      already knows how to dance
How to dance, how to dance
      The sun is always shining
      just maybe not today
      It will again
      but when I cannot say
I cannot say, I cannot say
      We live and we die
      We pull and try
      We love and we lie
      But you were right:
      We will survive
There's plenty of stars to go around
so let's fill our pockets high
We'll share them with the businessmen
who never look at the sky
At the sky, at the sky
      There's gold in every basement
      and diamonds in the waste
      There's evil in every eye
      but love in every face
In every face, in every face
      We live and we die
      We pull and try
      We love and we lie
      But you were right:
      We will survive
      There's angels all around us
      though they sometimes hide
      They watch us from above
and they stand by our side
By our side, by our side
Your eyes are more than green
They're the colors of a last prayer
      I called them home once
But my home is no longer there
      We live and we die
      We pull and try
      We love and we lie
      But you were right:
      We will survive
      But you were right:
      We will survive
And here's a kiss for your eyes

        Kele Goodwin – Free
        We played the martyr
        We played each other's guest
        We walked broken shorelines
But could not decide which was best
        You were the queen
Of a throne you did not want
        I the dying captain
Of a ship told only in song
We prayed at an altar of ice
It was gone before forgiveness was asked
        So we searched our reflections
But only our eyes stared back
You with the hair of a gypsy
Your eyes torn from the sea
Why have you found another so soon?
        Why have you forsaken me?
Do you need the soul of another
to hold under lock and key?
        To help you feel better,
        to make you feel free?
        Free
You played your violin for me
        We sung but never rhymed
        We walked the unpaved roads
But did not heed the signs
        You were the spider
        Spinning the silver thread
But you could not mold a web to hold
All the things you should have said
So we prayed to the trees
For the branches to lift us high
        Above the ground so cold
        And into each other's eyes
You with the hair of a gypsy
Your eyes torn from the sea
Why have you found another so soon?
        Why have you forsaken me?
Do you need the soul of another
to hold under lock and key?
        To help you feel better,
        to make you feel free?
        Free
        La la la . . .
        I served you, my lady
In the shadows but always on time
Now that I have but one need
You say you're no longer mine

Kele Goodwin – The Days of Debt
          I listened to your voice
          In a darkened room
          I listened to your laughter
Knowin' you'd be gone so soon
          So soon
          I listened to your voice
          Through wires I couldn't see
          I listened to your laughter
          Over mountain and sea
          And sea
          It's the days of debt
          The sun'll rise
          So please, darlin,
          Won't you close your eyes?
I do not want you to see me
          In the state I'm in
          So please, remember me
          As I have been
          I listened to you whisper
          Late at night
          I listened to you crying
          Your tears hid from sight
          From sight
Now I listen to you whisper
With a pen you never wanted to aim
Now I listen to you crying
          As you sign your name
          Your name
          It's the days of debt
          The sun will rise
          So please, darlin,
          Won't you close your eyes?
I do not want you to see me
          In the state I'm in
          So please, remember me

            Kele Goodwin – Red String
Oh, you are careless, oh daughter of the moon
The heart you protect is an empty room
You lost the key at the river's mouth
I chose to dive to pull it out
The water was dark, but the sunbeam shone bright
And as I dove, day turned to night
The key it sparkled and caught my eye
I grabbed hold and swam towards the sky
            The red string you tied
            Still hangs from my wrist,
            I wear it with pride
It reminds me never to reach
For a heart at the bottom of the sea
My body felt free, but my lungs did burn
As I rose to the surface with the key to return
On the riverbank you waited for me
            Underneath the old olive tree
I held a flash of gold in my hand
That had lain so long in the mud and the sand
You shed one tear and took it from me
Then you threw it back into the sea
            The red string you tied
            Still hangs from my wrist,
            I wear it with pride
It reminds me never to reach
For a heart at the bottom of the sea

              Kele Goodwin – Cursive
I wrote you a letter filled with feathers and rain
Returned to sender by way of aeroplane
It arrived on my doorstep, a fallen bird from the sky
Lost in the snowstorm, returning home to die
I wrote in cursive to you
The ink was made from a winter's afternoon
And I wrote with the pen you gave to me
On paper made from the leaves of our favorite tree
I held it in my hands, heavier than before
Light when I sent it, now the weight of a closed door
All the time I had to say the things I meant
Pages are the writing path, the letter's unsent
I wrote in cursive to you
The ink was made from a winter's afternoon
And I wrote with the pen you gave to me
On paper made from the leaves of our favorite tree

                Kele Goodwin – Johanna
                Please don't cry
                But if you do
I will save those paper tears
In a wooden box for you
They will live on a shelf,
                Hidden far away
                From your eyes, colored blue
And all the blood of your days
Sing to me from the willows where you lie
                Johanna, don't you cry
Sing to me from the willows where you lie
                Johanna, don't you cry
When we are grey and warm
                We can take them down
                Show them the light,
                Remember their sound
                I'll cut them into starfish
I will cut them into whales
I will cut them into warships
                With fire in their sails
Sing to me from the willows where you lie
                Johanna, don't you cry
Sing to me from the willows where you lie
                Johanna, don't you cry
Sing to me from the willows where you lie
                Johanna, don't you cry
Sing to me from the willows where you lie
                Johanna, don't you cry
