Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling has been arrested and charged with common assault.
The 18-year-old spent Thursday night in a police cell after being arrested at 10.30pm following an incident in Page Moss, Huyton, Liverpool.
Sterling appeared at Liverpool magistrates' court on Friday morning where he pleaded not guilty and was released on conditional bail. His trial will take place at the magistrates court on September 20.
A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "Raheem Sterling, 18, of Woolton, was charged with Section 39 common assault.
"Sterling was remanded in custody to appear at Liverpool Magistrates' Court today."
The winger, who was born in Jamaica, began his career at Queens Park Rangers before signing for Liverpool in 2010 and made his England debut against Sweden in November 2012.
