李准基在根据同名漫画改编的电视剧《一枝梅》中，饰演像侠盗罗宾汉般的李谦/勇儿/一枝梅一角，在白天为带点滑稽感的小混混，晚上则摇身一变为劫富济贫的义贼，奠定了准基一线演员的地位。这套《一枝梅》并非是2008年唯一一套改编同名漫画的电视剧。相比现代的韩剧，现在回看《一枝梅》的剧情，的确有点俗气夸张和略嫌煽情，然而此剧出色之处，在於众演员精湛的演技和令人信服的人物关系，也因此，此剧获得结局超过30%收视率的好成绩，准基也凭此片获得2008年SBS演技大赏中颁发的最优秀演技奖。
李准基入伍前最后一套作品是《英雄》，饰演意志坚定的记者(陈道赫)，相比以往的作品此角色较为沉静。虽然此剧成绩未如理想，收视率未能打破单位数字，然而，它还是为准基带来2009 年 MBC演技大赏中的最佳人气奖。
2010 年，李准基与原经纪公司Mentor娱乐的合约到期后，选择新成立的JG公司签定经纪合约。与原经纪公司Mentor自2008年因合约问题的诉讼官司，在准基与Mentor和解后终於宣告落幕。JG 公司由李准基的经理人成立，公司旗下就只有准基一人，专注为他发展演艺活动。尽管新公司为准基签定了电影《Grand Pix》及电视剧《信义》 (期后改由李民镐主演并於2012年播放)，最终准基因为申请延迟入伍日期被拒而无法参与。同年5月，准基毅然入伍，成为国防部宣传院队伍一员。
2012 年，准基退伍了，并签了IMX经纪公司，准备继续在演艺事业大展拳脚。《阿娘使道传》是他退伍后首部作品。为了演绎好角色，准基接受了特训，也构思了一些动作场面。虽然导演心目中的银悟一角，与准基所想的有所出入，准基却没有因此而妥协，为角色注入了个人独特的性格。尽管《阿娘》在全国的收视率一直未能如愿的超越 20%，然而回归萤幕的准基表现可算是沉稳扎实的。
The role thatestablished Lee Joon-gi as one of the top actors was as Lee Geom/Yong/Iljimaein Iljimae, the Robin Hood-like figure based on the comic strip of the samename. Playing both a comedic day persona and a serious thief and crimefighterby night, the drama wasn’t the only one of 2008 to use this comedic turn on ahistorical drama. When looking back in comparison to current dramas, some of itis rather cheesy and overdone and infuriating along the annoying route. Butwhat is excellent about the drama is the acting. Most characters developbelievable relationships that probably propelled the drama towards its endingwith ratings over 30%. For the drama, Lee grabbed the Top Excellence Award atthe 2008 SBS Drama Awards.
His last projectbefore enlisting was Hero, starring Lee as a determined journalist, a quieterrole in comparison to some of the previous ones. The drama wasn’t the best toleave on, not breaking single digits in ratings, but it did still get Lee thePopularity Award at the 2009 MBC Drama Awards.
In 2010, Lee signedwith a new management company, JG Company Inc., legally leaving MentorEntertainment after 2008 allegations that Lee had already signed into a newcompany were made. Lee and Mentor made nice, and in 2010, JG Company Inc. wasofficially established by Lee’s manager, intending to focus solely on Lee’sactivities. Despite the new company and having signed on for the film GrandPrix and the drama Faith, which later aired in 2012 starring Lee Min-ho, LeeJoon-gi was called for military service and had to comply after a request todefer the date was denied, enlisting in May as a member of the now-defunctcelebrity PR unit.
Lee was discharged in 2012,was signed with a new management company Interactive Media Mix and was ready toget back into acting. His first project post-military was Arang and theMagistrate. For the role, he trained and had input in his own action scenes.Though Lee felt a bit restricted by the director’s desires for the role ofEun-oh, by the end of the drama he had inserted his own personality into therole without compromising it. While ratings weren’t as high as desired — neverbreaking the 20% mark by nationwide standards — it had a solid showing for areturn.
