Stefano Gabbana says you are a woman ‘who can wear nothing but mascara’, but you have said that ‘red lipstick is a cure-all’. So do the lips or eyes have it?
The combination of mascara and red lipstick feels very chic, but if I had to choose between them I’d pick red lipstick.
The commercial for The One campaign has been critically acclaimed. What was it like making it with Martin Scorsese as director and Matthew McConaughey as your co-star?
I loved Stefano and Domenico’s idea of me playing a modern version of a charming, devilish, independent Fellini-esque woman. Making it with Martin Scorsese and Matthew, who are both so brilliant, and shooting in New York was inspirational. We had a lot of fun along the way.
How easy was it to flirt with Matthew?
I think the dress did it. In fact, the most provocative thing I say in the advert is, when Matthew remarks that he likes my dress, ‘The dress likes you!’ I loved that little black lace Dolce & Gabbana dress – it flirts for you!
Is there anything about the way you look that you would want to change?
I try not to worry about that – I’ve got what I’ve got and I’m pleased. However, I think everybody’s got something about their looks that they would change if they could. For me, it really depends on the day – sometimes I’m, like, ‘Gosh I wish this eye was shaped more like that one,’ or, ‘I wish my nose was finer,’ or, ‘My figure was more athletic and toned.’ I try to love myself and play up the parts of myself that I like, instead of hiding the parts of myself that I don’t like. I think that I have a nice face shape and a nice profile.
Is perfume a part of your evening dressing-up and going-out routine?
If I am going to a party or special event I like to wear an elegant yet provocative scent. And this year, as I am, as Stefano says, ‘the embodiment of The One’, I’ll be wearing The One. It’s floral, fruity and really classic.
Will you be heading to the gym even more in the New Year to make up for the all that festive food?
I am one of those people who feels bloated if I sit around too long eating and drinking and not exercising. So I may hit the gym a bit more, but not as punishment or out of guilt but because I feel physically and mentally better when I exercise. And it’s nice time out for myself.
Make-up guru Pat McGrath, Dolce & Gabbana’s creative adviser, says that you have a ‘flawless complexion’. What are your tips for perfect skin?
My best secret is cleaning all my make-up brushes and tools at least once every two weeks, using either a special brush cleaner bought from a make-up counter or just with shampoo. Cleaning keeps colours from blending and removes any bacteria that may build up on brushes and applicators. But my other tip came from my mum, who always told me to drink plenty of water. She has the best skin of anyone I know, so I follow her beauty advice religiously!
What are you planning for your New Year’s Eve party look?
I am going to make my eyes really pop for New Year’s Eve. Lots of Passioneyes Mascara and Glam Liner is easy to do and is a sexy, festive look to ring in the New Year.
Do you know what presents will you be giving this Christmas?
It’s really difficult to find presents for those of my friends and family who pretty much have everything they want and will be getting lots of other gifts. So what I have decided to do this year is to get gifts from Oxfam Unwrapped. Purchasing something for families in need – a goat or an alpaca or some essential farming item that they cannot otherwise afford – is a way of giving a unique gift that reminds those of us who are so much luckier in our lives that giving is receiving.
What is the last thing you do before you go to sleep at night?
I always, always remove my make-up before bed, even when I get home from a Christmas Party at 4am!
