“Over that time, I had tried to develop myself as a songwriter,” Elyar says. “I knew that to take music seriously I needed to be better than I was.” As he became more confident as a songwriter, Elyar decided his future was as a solo artist and the band split in early 2012. “The band was fun while it lasted but we were very pop punk and as I was writing more and more and getting better at it, I just kind of naturally evolved away from that sound. My heart wasn’t in it anymore.”
With his year out nearly over, and no longer part of a band, Elyar launched his YouTube channel “eldoode” with a cover of ‘Someone Like You’ by Adele, a decision that would change the course of his life. A cover of Carly Rae Jepsen’s ‘Call Me Maybe’ followed, and racked up a couple of million views in a month. The music industry started to take note.
Elyar shakes his head in almost disbelief. “When things started to blow up, I had so much interest. Word got around and everyone seemed to want to check me out. It was overwhelming but I tried to pay it cool,” he says. “I had over 30 offers, including from big names in America. Then the labels were emailing us too. I was quite stressed at the time because I was also pretty broke. My parents are really supportive but I don’t come from a rich family. We were living off Tesco meal deals and we could hardly afford to pay to get to the meetings. It was tempting to make a decision based on money and not what was right for me in the long term, but then I started bringing in cash from the YouTube videos and that really helped.”
Eager to prove that there was more to his artistry than just acoustic cover songs, Elyar would take his guitar and a USB stick with his own material on it when he visited labels. “I always felt different – everything revolved around music for me. From a young age, I was into creating,” he explains of his ambitions. It was this passion for performing his own songs that cemented Elyar’s decision to sign with Global Talent, who recognised his potential not only as a singer, but as a songwriter, straight away.
Global, however, were not in the initial wave of management and labels competing for Elyar’s attention, and so in April 2012 it was Elyar (with the help of Jamesy) who made the effort to get in touch with them instead. “We knew Global had just brought out a new band called Lawson and we really wanted to meet up,” he says. “Someone gave us a contact and we were invited into the offices.” Two months later, Global offered him a deal.
Elyar admits his journey hasn’t always been a smooth one. He signed his first record deal with Polydor but it didn’t work out. “I was in the studio for a year, which was brilliant because it helped me develop so much as a writer, but they weren’t releasing anything and I was ready to go.” Elyar left Polydor in late summer 2013 (“there was no drama, we all made the right decision”) and signed with RCA Records at the beginning of September.
Elyar’s year in the studio, including sessions with Wayne Hector and Danish producer Cutfather, produced most of his forthcoming album. His catchy debut single ‘Do It All Over Again’ was co-written with Chris Young, who has previously had cuts with The Wanted and The Saturdays. ‘Smile’, another potential single, was written when he was fifteen. 我懒得纠正了 18就18 官方点吧。。。
His fans, known as ‘Foxers’ can be found from the UK to Asia, Australia and the US, and are awaiting his debut release with much anticipation.
