Gardner met her first husband, Mickey Rooney, soon after she arrived in Hollywood and they made quite the odd couple. Gardner, who was 5'6", towered over her more diminutive hubby and the match was not made in Hollywood heaven. “He was a lecherous little sod . . . he went through the women like a hot knife through fudge,” Gardner wrote in her memoir. Although Gardner famously refused to be another one of Hughes' trophy women, they remained close friends until his death in 1976. Gardner's second marriage to bandleader Artie Shaw, the "King of Swing, was short-lived and emotionally destructive for the starlet. In her memoir Ava Gardner: The Secret Conversations, Gardner said of Shaw: "He used to put me down so much I lost complete confidence in myself. He had me thoroughly convinced that I was completely stupid." (Photo originally published in Ava Gardner: The Secret Conversations, courtesy of Simon & Schuster.)

Gardner's passionate love affair with singer Frank Sinatra, who was married with children, caused a scandal and labeled Gardner a homewrecker. They eventually married in 1951, 72 hours after Sinatra was granted a legal separation. Gardner said of husband number 3: "Frank and I were too much alike . . . [but] you don’t pay too much attention to what other people tell you when a guy’s good in the feathers." In her memoir, Gardner wrote of her fondness for her leading man: "He was my hero when I was a kid. He was still my hero when we made our first movie together and until the day he died." In the 1954 film The Barefoot Contessa, Gardner played Spanish sex symbol Maria Vargas, one of best known roles, opposite Humphrey Bogart as director Harry Dawes. Gardner confessed her dislike for Bogart in her memoir: "I just didn’t like him very much as a man—and he had no respect for me at all."
