The Governors Ball 2014 crowd wasn't overly packed yet for the early 1:30 Bleachers set on Sunday (June 8). The dudes of Bleachers, led by fun.'s Jack Antonoff, ran onstage with Antonoff sporting a red ball cap, skinny jeans rolled up and high socks, in a nerd-meets-rock star look that was perfectly endearing and defined the uplifting set. That day, Antonoff sat down for a backstage video interview with Billboard, explaining his songwriting for Bleachers differs from his work with fun. in that the new project's music "is lonelier… With fun. there's so many ideas bouncing all around and with this it's me alone in my head trying to make sense of what I think a song should be."
Antonoff also acknowledged keeping the once top-secret Bleachers underwraps until it was ready was a challenge, because "not talking about something, you start to wonder if it is actually happening."
Later, when Bleachers took the stage, they hit hard from the beginning. Opening with the Springsteen inspired "Wild Heart," Antonoff's band brought soaring back up vocals and thumping bass. Trading guitars, he launched into previously leaked "Roller Coaster," another summer banger.
"How's it going? How's it going?" Antonoff yelled before letting out a large scream into the mic, trying to amp up the still sleepy crowd. "Thank you so much for watching a band that has released two songs," he laughed. "The good news is we have a lot of new ones. This song is called "Wake Me," he announced before surging into the catchy hook "I can't believe I captured your heart" over and over to the amped up crowd. At one point, he even dropped his glasses right before a guitar solo, not missing a beat as he slipped them back on and launched into the solo halfway through - a pro through and through.
"Festival goers are the coolest. People who rest all day and drive to a show aren't half as cool as you guys, and you've been baking in the sun all day! So thank you, can't wait for a whole summer of these," Antonoff shared with the crowd, only a handful of shows into Bleachers live career. If this set was any indication, Bleachers "Strange Desire" will be a summer favorite, and a 2014 standout. The crowd was nothing but fully awake for his closer, the upbeat anthem and first single "I Wanna Get Better," and the audience danced along and sang with the refrain. It was a perfect way to start Gov Ball Day Three.
