In May we heard various reports that location scouting had begun in Spain. And now according to a report from Cadena, we can say that the country will be officially serving as a backdrop for Game of Thrones Season 5.
In a meeting with the New Economy Forum, James Costos, U.S. ambassador to Spain and former vice president of HBO, confirmed that after subsequent visits to the area, and conversations with various officials, the deal has become final.
The Andalusian region of Spain will join the ranks of Croatia, Iceland, and Ireland to welcome the Game of Thrones cast and crew when filming for Season 5 begins.
No specific locations have been confirmed, but according to Cadena’s sources The Alcázar of Seville has been finalized, as the other palatial candidates were ruled out. The Alcázar will serve as the Water Gardens of Dorne, the private residence of House Martell, and it is likely that additional locations have been chosen in a nearby city (or cities) to represent the capital of Dorne, Sunspear.
The Alcázar of Seville is certainly fit for the ruling house of Dorne, as it is the oldest palace still in use in Europe, acting as a part-time residence for the present Spanish royal family. When the royals aren’t in town, the Seville is a popular tourist attraction, known for it’s opulent gardens, cold-water baths, and stunning Moorish architecture.
