Total Film: Unlike Black Widow, Lucy has actual superpowers - did that make a nice change?

Scarlett Johansson:　It certainly cuts down on bruising! [laughs] You move your hand, and things lift up and people fight each other… then you do that [moves her hand] and they all fall down. It's fun to be Black Widow because her fighting style is to use her size to her advantage. There's these huge guys and she's this little mouse who's hard to capture. But like I said, it's nice to have the old wave-of-the-hand effect!

TF: You've come a long way since your child-actress days…

SJ: I've been working for 20 years and you know, I've had a lot of really wonderful opportunities. I've been able to maintain my own artistic integrity, whatever that means. I've dabbled in different genres, worked with different people, but have also had the good fortune of working with some people more than once.

TF: Starting out, could you tell which films would make you a bigger star?

SJ: I think the films that kind of took me to the next level, into the zeitgeist or whatever, were ones no one could've predicted. When I did Lost In Translation, the script was 76 pages and it was made for like $12, and I didn't know if that would work as a film. But when a small movie like that becomes a kind of cultural phenomenon it's a huge surprise.

SJ: There's things about being in the public eye that are shitty and annoying. [laughs] That sounds really eloquent! But at the end of the day, I haven't had like this huge backlash. You don't have it anymore, and then you can never get it back… But it's part of the give and take.

TF: You have a milestone birthday coming up…Are you looking forward to embracing your thirties?

Q1: What about the character, Lucy, in the script drew you in to eventually fill her role on the screen?

SJ: Because the script was pretty conceptual, what really drew me into the project was Luc's vision for the film. He presented me with an extensive amount of visual cues, mood boards and visual identity of Lucy's evolution.

SJ: I will be back when the right project calls, if theater goers will have me ;) Working in theater is my greatest challenge and fear and joy.

Q10: What mental and physical challenges did you face while preparing for the role and while filming?

SJ: I think the hardest part of playing Lucy was trying to avoid the pitfalls of playing someone who loses her 'humanity'. It would be easy to turn in a monotonous performance b/c of the lack of emotional tools she eventually has to express herself.

Q11: What was it like working with Morgan Freeman and Luc Besson?

SJ: It was really important for Luc and I to trust each other in this endeavor. Luc doesn't settle for anything less than what he views as perfect and I am definitely a 'people pleaser', so while the work we did was exhausting at times, it was very rewarding.

Q12: Was getting into character different than any of your other action roles, like Natasha Romanov? Were the stunts harder?

SJ: The stunts are always hardest on the Marvel films because Natasha is a skilled fighter. I train for big choreographed fight sequences. In 'Lucy', the character doesn't have a fighting style, all of her movements are instinctive, which means that fights are messy, they don't require precision.

Q13: What is one message you hope people take away after seeing this movie?

Q14: What type of training did you have to do to prepare for this role?

SJ: I just wrapped Captain America 2 about a month before shooting so I was already pretty much at my physical goal. I just continued my weight and circuit training with my trainer, Brendan Johnston. We train together and it helps me to challenge myself, knowing that I have a partner who is right there with me, even at 5am! I like to go to work knowing that the most physically challenging part of my day is behind me.

SJ: I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to introduce one of the most bad ass female superheroes to the cinematic universe. I hope that with the popularity and success of female characters like Black Widow along with the push from directors like Joss Whedon and Luc Besson, directors celebrate and examine strong female protagonists, the playing field for well-developed characters in cinema today will level out.

Avengers: Age of Ultron Scarlett Johansson Talks Black Widow's Greatest Power - IGN

The events of Captain America 2 will continue to play out in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Scarlett Johansson is set to make her debut as a Luc Besson-brand action hero in Lucy on July 25. The actress is becoming known for playing a variety of complex, and often a**kicking characters - perhaps most notably, Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow. We were able to speak with Johansson recently in advance of the release of Universal's Lucy - stay tuned for more on that. During the course of our conversation, we touched on her role as Widow in the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron, whether she'd like to see the character receive superpowers, and where she sees her going from here.
Should Widow Have Superpowers?:
One of the interesting things about Black Widow is that she's one of the only members of the group without either superpowers or a technical marvel of a suit. She's just herself, a kick-a** assassin. When asked if she would ever want to find a way to manufacture a kind of superpower, to join the team at that level, Johansson said that Widow's devious mind is actually her greatest asset.
"Oh, man... I think her greatest attribute is that she's -- I don't want to say she has a criminal mind, but she does in a way," Johansson said. "She's a super spy. Her ability to understand the complexity of the criminal mind, she uses that to her advantage. She's often the one that's going, 'Right, you think it's this way, but if you think about it from this person's perspective, this might be the answer.' She's always using her experience in her sordid past to her advantage. I don't think there's any super suit that could supersede that for her. I think what she lends to the team -- she let's everyone else play with their big toys. And she gets some pretty good toys too, especially in Avengers 2 -- I can't complain. [Laughs]"
Joss Whedon is Part Hulk, Part Widow:
When last we saw Widow, at the conclusion of the game-changing Captain America: The Winter Soldier, she was facing a crisis of conscience and unsure of her place in this new world. When we asked Johansson how, having had the dream of S.H.I.E.L.D. shattered for her would play out in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, the actress said that her character was going to be making some very big choices.
"Of course in Avengers 2, it's very much a continuation, a maturation, of this universe, of this reality," the actress said. "It's not a sequel in the sense that it feels like a rehash. 'Hey, remember this old thing you loved in the first one? There's even more in the second!' It's nothing like that. Joss has lived with these characters now for a couple of years, and he is, as you can imagine, obsessed and tirelessly worked to help these characters evolve. Of course, I'm very fortunate that Joss has an affection for female characters in the work that he writes, and an understanding of them. To me, the Widow is a part of Joss. It really is. I think about Joss, I think about him being part Hulk and part Widow. [Laughs] I don't know if he would agree with that, but I've really thought a lot about, 'What is Joss?' He's all of his characters, of course, like every great writer. At this stage, when you see the Widow, she's -- especially in Avengers, these characters all have a past, and hers is a very complex one, where she's realizing -- and it's kind of a continuation of Cap 2 -- 'I've never made an active choice. I'm a product of other people's imposition.' That's going to catch up with her. That's bound to have a huge effect. There's got to be a result of that realization. I think that in Avengers 2 you'll see that. You'll see her actively making some choices in her life, for better or worse. You know, when she splashes, the wave is big -- all these characters have that effect. So it'll be interesting to see what the audience thinks of what kind of wave we're sending their way. [Laughs]"
A Complex Superhero:
An IGN reader, @clockwork_bells, requested that we ask the actress if she selects roles "based on certain criteria, such as the impact on girls/women with strong female characters?”
"I don't know that I actively choose my roles with any preconceived ideas of the impact they might have on other women," Johansson reflected. "It's a nice byproduct of the choices I've made, but I've never sought out roles that would empower other people. That's never been a part of my process of picking roles. I've been very fortunate, particularly with Black Widow in the Marvel films, to finally play one of the first superheroines that's complex and is more than just a decoration. She's a product of where she comes from, of her backstory, of her struggles as a person, a woman, as a product of a program, as an orphan. It was all of these things. She's really complex, and I see that genre opening up for women. That's fun to be a part of."

There used to be a career template for teen actresses. First, the family-friendly movie or TV series. Then a slice-and-dice horror movie, or maybe even a franchise. Then, a somewhat sexy rom-com and — if you worked it — adult, leading-lady status.
Scarlett Johansson took a different path.
"All those teen slasher movies were popular back then, but I never liked those movies," she says. "Maybe I was just already a jaded New Yorker at 15. Maybe if I'd been a huge fan I would have done a ton. But I wanted to do the kind of movies that I wanted to see."
Nearly 15 years later, she still is.
And for the last several years, Johansson, 29, has been on a real roll — playing the offscreen cyber seductress of "Her" and the transforming alien of "Under the Skin," putting a Jersey "Don Jon" in his place and "Chef" on his path, saluting Janet Leigh in "Hitchcock" and kicking butt in Marvel's "The Avengers" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier."
It's about as wide a variety of roles as you can imagine (there was even a Broadway run of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" in the mix — following her Tony-winning debut in "A View From the Bridge").
The actress' range of work gets even wider with the new "Lucy," opening Friday.
Directed by French action auteur Luc Besson, it starts off as the slightly sci-fi sister to his "La Femme Nikita," with Johansson as an unwilling drug mule turned action hero.
Except that the accidental ingestion of the experimental drugs turns Lucy into something else — a rapidly evolving, next-gen human with almost godlike powers. Soon, what seemed to be a sleek, simple thriller gets philosophical, even cosmic.
"The script was pretty bare, actually, when I got it," Johansson says. "It wasn't filled with all this visual sort of fluff that sometimes pads a script out, which was great. The downside was that it was so conceptual, I couldn't really grasp onto anything... So I met with Luc, and he ended up giving me tons of visual material — I never got such a huge amount of material from a director. But I think he was aware that a lot of (the movie) was still in his mind."
As Johansson read through it, though, she grew more and more intrigued, not even by the role so much as the idea.
"Lucy, she really could be anybody," she says. "There's nothing particularly remarkable about her as a person, honestly. But the movie wasn't about her, or her simply playing out some kind of revenge story, which could easily become monotonous. What appealed to me was purely the fact that the character is in this constant state of transition. That seemed to me to be the most interesting challenge."
GROWING UP ACTING
Acting interested Johansson from the beginning; growing up in Greenwich Village as the daughter of an architect and an artsy, theater-loving mom, she was still in preschool when she began bugging her parents to take her out on auditions.
Her mother kept putting her off; finally, there were some tryouts for commercials, where the husky-voiced little kid got turned down, quickly and repeatedly.
But then, at 8, she landed a small part in the off-Broadway play "Sophistry" with Ethan Hawke ("She loves animals, singing, tap dancing and dedicates this performance to Frank Sinatra and Grandma" read her Playbill bio). A year later, she got her first movie role, in "North."
And then, after losing the lead in "The Parent Trap" to Lindsay Lohan — talk about the road not taken — she booked a better, breakout part in Robert Redford's "The Horse Whisperer," and began getting leads in offbeat independents.
"I made this active choice early on, when I was a teenager, not to do certain kinds of movies," she says. "I was way more into indie films at that point — back when indie films really were independent — and the people in that scene were so welcoming to me that I became, not a fixture, but I guess got sort of ingratiated into that."
There was another difference, too, she says gratefully — her parents allowed her to just be a talented kid, not the breadwinner.
"Luckily, you know, I wasn't acting for any other reason than just I enjoyed acting," she says. "I was not supporting a family. I was not trying to become a famous person — I didn't even know what that meant then. I just wanted to act."
For other teens, though — increasingly, today — acting is only the means. Celebrity itself seems to be the goal.
"I know it sounds ridiculous to say — it was only 15 years ago — but teenage actors weren't famous then the way they are now," Johansson says. "And, yeah, there are all these opportunities, and you have these huge blockbusters built around teens — that wasn't even a possibility at the time. But then there's also this hype about teens today, all this attention being paid to their private lives in this almost perverted way..."
She laughs.
"I'm definitely glad I'm not 15 anymore!"
Most of the performers who survive teenage stardom seem to have done it because they included college in their plans. Johansson did think of it, too, and after high school applied to NYU's School of the Arts. They turned her down. So, OK, fine — she went back to actually making films, instead of studying them.
But, even without the break, she stayed sane. Even as an adult, there have never been reports of her stumbling out of clubs, or throwing fits on movie sets. (In the closest thing she had to a scandal — leaked nude photos, a few years ago — she was the embarrassed victim, exposed when a hacker stole shots she had sent to then-husband Ryan Reynolds.
