Do you guys remember when Katy Perry and Riff Raff wore double denim to the Video Music Awards? It wasn’t 2001, it was yesterday. We were lucky enough to talk with Johnny Wujek, Katy’s longtime stylist, about the inspiration behind her nostalgic look, how to steal her beauty game, and more.

The initial idea for the costume, according to Johnny, came from Katy. He told us, “Katy came to me with this idea. The idea was perfect since she was walking the carpet with Riff Raff.

We have always loved how Justin and Britney’s denim looked because it is so iconic. So I reached out to Versace to modernize the design for Katy and Riff. We love a stunt.” As do we, Johnny. As do we.

While it kiiinda hard to focus on anything other than the denim explosion, Katy and Riff were, in fact, well accessorized in Versace. So much Versace. Bedazzled Medusa head necklaces, rings, and chokers. Versace party for 2. There appears to be no pizza print—Katy’s fave, y’know—on the table, but Johnny reassured us, “It’s always possible that there’s a delicious little slice as an accessory!”

Under the long patchwork skirt, Katy had on bejeweled Versace heels, which are straight out of a 2001 graduation photo.。。。。。。。。一堆珠光宝气范思哲。。。

We also had a chance to speak with Jake Bailey, Katy’s makeup artist, who described her VMA makeup as “quintessential Katy.” The look hinged on “bright red lips, black liquid liner, and big lashes,” which Jake, fortunately, shared how to get using a few COVERGIRL products.

To get her heavily lined eye look, Jake started by blending COVERGIRL’s Flamed Out Shadow Pot in Scorching Cocoa into the crease of her eyelids and then added Flamed Out Shadow Pot in Blazing White onto her eyelids and browbone for highlights. He told us, “I also dusted some of that same pearlescent shadow onto the ridge of her cheekbones for an extra glow. I then created a sharp jet black cat eye using Bombshell Intensity Liner. I finished the eye look with several coats of Bombshell Volume Mascara.”
For those bright red lips, Jake lined her lips with LipPerfection Lip Liner in Hot and then layered the matching LipPerfection Lip Color shade in Hot 305 on top. On top of that–red lips take #WERK, y’all–Jake topped the lipstick with a coat of Flamed Out Shadow Pencil in Crystal Flame for a metallic sheen.

Oh, and if you were wondering Riff’s role in this entire thing—we have the deets. Johnny told us, “Katy presented Riff with the idea, and he was on board. Katy and I never do anything half way, so this red carpet moment is another one of those grand ideas come to life.”
