MAD no doubt is one of the most recognized architectural practices in China and worldwide. Every year, MAD receives countless job and internship
applications. To be able to work at MAD will definitely enrich your career as even though the people working here might have been lucky, but are
undeniably outstanding. What could possibly be on the minds of the MAD interns?

Who is your favorite architect? Why?
I believe that as an architect, one should always learn from the nature. Nature, as the greatest architect has provided us with unlimited kinds of
ideas and thoughts.
What is the major characteristic of your current school’s education?
It cannot be characterized because it enjoys a huge variety of thoughts, theories and methods.
What have you gained during the MAD internship?
Mr. Bao’s lecture on traditional Chinese ways of worship, as well as his opinion on the diversion of ancient Chinese and Greek culture.
What are your thoughts and feelings upon Chinese Architecture and the environment? Any suggestion?
The categorization of so-called “Chinese Architecture” is merely a compromise. It is stuck in between the context of globalization and localization.
Therefore it either go down to a narrower regional scope or fit itself to the larger international and universal scale. Localization, I believe, may be
a better way.
What is your dream?
To free myself from talking about dreams by realizing them instantly and adamantly.
What would you do if you were not an architect?
A client.
What is your dream project?
Complete freedom and abundant resource.
What is your favorite project in your portfolio? Why?
My favorite project is the portfolio itself, because making such a portfolio encouraged me reevaluate and rethink about my projects. The feeling
about each project is much more important compared with the projects themselves.

CCTV - The Ultimate Need of a National Press.
What are the challenges?
Why should we put such a colossal building right in the center of Beijing CBD? Only after we figure out this unique Chinese problem will discussing
the rebuild become possible.
What is the attitude of this national press?
CCTV as a national press, always stands on the opposite side of cultural freedom. As a result, the relationship between CCTV and the city is more
like a kind of cultural collision. A unique scene must be created. It can be achieved by lifting large public buildings, giving back the residents city
space.
Model Making
Concrete is chosen as the material of the model in order to achieve the effect of rock hitting the ground.

It is a really confusing design.
Strategies
The basic strategy dealing with the old city of Beijing is to maximize the use of underground space. In the meantime, I hope to create a sense of
conflict between the old city and the new building.
Water Flows in Hutong
I intend to create a feeling of water flows in Hutong. Flowing water as a motion figure will become an activation to old city.
Is it a proper solution?
From the time I got this design brief, I have always be wondering whether it is a proper thing to build a modern commercial complex in the old city
of Beijing. If one urban complex has to be built, I believe that imitating old building forms is not an active solution to this problem and has no
contribution to the future.
To conclude, I believe that the best way to protect an old city is to repair it, not to replace it with many fancy new buildings.

Slum in the center of Beijing CBD.
How isit done?
By dividing the mega structure into sellable pieces of in-air land, we can fill the structure with variable kinds of buildings. Built spontaneously by
residents, those buildings can create a live variety of living environment.
Completing the CBD Walking System
We chose parking area inside CBD as our building site, and connected those residential buildings and those commercial ones with a walking system.
The walking system is also equipped with small shops alongside the roads.
