CREATIVE meals for kids yesterday wowed judges of the My Little Lunchbox
competition at the Brunei Edutainment Wonderland in Jerudong Park and Country
Club (JPCC) Amphitheatre.
The event, organised by The Brunei Times, saw a total of 14 entries submitted by
participants whose ages ranged from 18 to 64 years old.
From a rice-based dish, which was shaped into Disney’s latest animation, Baymax
of ‘Big Hero 6’, to a sandwich decorated with carrots, vegetables and small chunks
of sausages to form a figure of a cat, it was edible art on showcase.
Evaluating the best five artworks based on presentation, taste and healthy factors
were five judges — Maurina Abdul Hamid, Kamarul Ajimain, Lai Yuhan, Rusydiah
Sudin and Nelson Dennis — who are experts in the field of the food and health
industries.
Assessing mainly taste and creativity, local food blogger Maurina said, “It is so fun to
observe a selection of food entries! I was quite impressed with the presentation of
the munchies and it presented not just delicious but healthy choices.”
Another blogger from geekinwhite.com, Kamarul offered a different view. “Some of the
entries are remarkably nice and I appreciate the effort given for the good- looking
meals into an artwork. Taste wise on the other hand, a few of the combos do not work
nicely.”
The next judge, Manager of The Energy Kitchen Lai enjoyed the whole experience.
“I was quite surprised to see how these lunchboxes not only demonstrated a healthy
portion of the criteria that we were focusing on but offered a delightful feast to my taste
buds. The ingredients in the meal were nutritious, which reflects on what we serve in
the restaurant.”
As for Health Education Officer from the Youth Health Promotion Division at Health
and Promotion Centre, Rusydiah said, “Such competition reflects good effort from the
parents to spend extra time to observe on what their children consume, which I hope
will inspire others to do the same. But, in this competition, there is a need to be
particular with the portion. The size of some of them here may not be suitable in terms
of the plate serving for kids.”
Her colleague Nelson added that “Moderation is the key”. “Along with the diversity of
ingredients and well-balanced choices that may be considered as the winning meal,
the portion nonetheless needs to be realistic and should take account the age of the
child they were modelling for.”
The top five participants will be invited to demonstrate their winning creations to judges
and members of the public on Sunday at the theme park. During that day, winners will
also receive prizes in the form of vouchers from Fitness Zone and The Energy Kitchen,
Best Eastern vouchers, Tupperware hampers worth $70 and renowned Tanita scales.
The competition, which is supported by the Health Promotion Centre and sponsored by
The Energy Kitchen, Fitness Zone, Best Eastern, Tupperware and Syarikat Perniagaan Malar Setia, aims to promote healthy meals for kids among others.
