After the Hunger Games, this is the most fascinating page-turner for me. I finished reading
the first book in five days, and I just could put the book down for one second. Truly, I love
the book, and I would like to share my thoughts concerning how the book catches me.
First, the storyline is just amazing. It is, first of all, very logical. In other words, you won't
think the heroine is a crazy or irrational person for doing things. The explanations were
given for every action and even the characteristics of the characters. It is also very
surprising and exciting! It is of many different genres. I love the historical, political and
cultural depiction of that period in Scotland (I'm definitely going to add Scotland in my
bucket list for traveling). Events follow events, intertwined by the deepening relationship
between Jamie and Claire, the political complexity in the Mckenzie clan, and the vastly
interesting adventures of Claire. I could tell that Diana did a lot of research with respect to
history, culture, and even medicine. The use of details makes the world she is trying to
build a real place. It feels like that the author actually travels to the 18th century, and she
is merely writing down her travel story. Second, the character depiction is a huge success, which, I guess, helps a lot when Starz casts for Outlander TV show. My favorite
character, of course, is Jamie Fraser. Diana did a fantastic job bringing Jamie alive.
He is not perfect, but unreasonably charming! I love him for his sexy red hair and blue
eyes. But what I love most about this lad is his optimism! He has lost her parents, has
been through the unimaginable hardness in military, and has suffered from flogging and
humiliation, but he is always so cheerful, amusing, ready to tell jokes, and even making
fun of himself. He does not self-pity, but chooses to have a better attitude and always
makes those around him laugh. Jamie is kind-hearted. He offers to take the punishment
for a blonde little girl; he shows Claire kindness when she first fell into a complete foreign
world; he also tries to revenge a boy who suffers the same humiliation as he does even
though he does not even know the boy personally. Coarse he might be, but his heart is
tender and warm. Jamie is also very brave; he went through the flogging without uttering
a single sound, refusing to beg for mercy. He went in Fort William to free Claire armed
with only a pistol without bullet. He is smart, and managed to stay calm and think
rationally, even under severe pain. He fights with Claire like cat and dog, and even beats
her with his belt, though later he apologizes and swear never to beat her again. He is
stubborn like an ox, but he keeps all his promises, good or bad(the spanking haha). As
for Claire, I guess she is a strong woman, and a beautiful lass with brown hairs. I know
how it feels to be thrown into a complete new environment and was forced to get used to
it. She did her best to survive and succeeded. She has a kind heart as his husband
Jamie, and she is very decisive; she knows what she wants. Later when she found out she
loves Jamie more than anything, she makes her decision to stay with him, and never
abandon him even if he almost died. I love the part when Claire and Jamie fight. They call
each other really bad names, using filthy words, but they always find a way back to each
other. It makes the story more real--ah their relationship is not perfect; people can
actually get mad at the person that they love deeply, and how you can forgive each other
after a fight. Although I enjoyed the book greatly, I do think there are things that are
unnecessary. I do think that family background and childhood stories help build a strong
character, just like Diana did when she is depicting Jamie, but too many of them can be
distracting. Overall, I loved this book, and plan to move on to The age of Innocence. I'll
save the remaining books for later.
