The director is looking at the two roles kissing fervently. I could well imagine, when the film was on back in the 1960s in America, how many women there would have liked to switch places with Joanne to be held in those strong arms ! It's sort of a joke, but it might stand to reason, as Paul Newman was popluar by then having made a noise for himself.
