4. Scandals and accident.
When Motley Crüe got so fucked up that they started to make mediocre albums, their sales still boosted, very much thanx to all the attention they got from all scandals and controversies.
Marilyn Manson brilliantly built the entire concept around doing that with using symbols and attributes that makes people relate to fascism, giving (fake?) blow job to another band member on stage and putting fuel on the fire when hilarious rumours are around.
The first AC/DC album after the tragic famous death of singer Bon Scott took the band from being a band on the rise to releasing the second most sold album on the planet (over 50 million copies sold). Indeed Back in Black is being regarded as the band’s best album, it would have been a million seller regardless, but the trick to go from a band on the rise to sell 22 x platinum (!) in USA was very much helped by a combination of being a band just breaking though already being on the radar screen, the publicity around the death and the fact that the next album had a title and cover relating to the band’s trauma around the death.
The drummer of Def Leppard (Rick Allen) is more famous for loosing his arm than for his playing. All the attention that his accident gave the band was a fantastic publicity boost when they released their best selling Hysteria album, being the first famous band to have a one armed drummer.
5. Sex. The oldest known sculpture picturing a human is a naked women. It has been estimated to be maybe as old as 40.000 years old. From the sculptures of ancient Greece to the famous nude oil paintings in more recent history, naked bodies has been a very common object for expressing art. So in a way it’s hard to explain how a couple of boobs still can cause so much emotions in our modern tolerant times (both positive and negative). Using nudity in the very simplest form of art would be having sexy people in the music video clip. It always worked brilliantly. The simple trick can be repeated endlessly as long as humans have an urge to breed. I guess this one didn’t come as a very big surprise to anyone.
So, let’s sum it up, shall we? In one way you can say the clip is like a pizza, where I put in all the different ingredients in there as a statement of what I’ve learnt during my years in the music industry. The entire 25 Year Art project was about summing up what I learnt, test it in real life to validate it and somehow display it. In regard of point 1 out of 4 in my list of ingredients I wanted for this clip, one can regard this as a video thesis of how the music industry works. And the reactions to it proves much of the thesis. In just a few days this self produced clip to a cover song got almost 6 times more views in just a few days than the clip that was done to ”Adulruna Rediviva” (our most expensive and advanced clip to one of our best songs), has got in almost 2 years…

- Symbols. It’s quite common knowledge that we all associate to different things when we see various symbols. So when Marilyn Manson wanted to shock and create PR, he used several things that would make us associate with Third Reich; banners with white circles (surrounded by red) containing black flashing symbols that are very close to the S-runes that the SS used in Third Reich. And besides having performed and made photo sessions in a uniform with a SS type of hat, he’s singing standing in a rostrum, which make everyone thinking of Hitler standing making a speech. So it’s very much in your face and not much of a mystery, everyone who has seen a WWII Hollywood movie or some related clips on internet get it. It’s association PR for dummies one could say. [see picture 1].

Far more subtle is Rammstein, who make people get similar associations via the vocals by singing in a regional german dialect where the ”r” is spoken and rolled in the front of the mouth. Then they exaggerate the ”r” and people associate to how nazis speak german in Hollywood movies and to Hitler speeches (he had that specific dialect and when he would get upset at the end of his speeches, the language would sound very sharp). This in combination with a music that is march tempo and pictures with muscular men without shirts looking at the horizon (which was typical of that time era in both Third Reich and Soviet Union) made intellectuals and people with more in dept knowledge react and accuse the band of being nazis. Cunningly both Marilyn Manson and several members of Rammstein are jewish, so they both have a sort of ace up the sleeve there they could first take advantage of all the publicity and then easier fend off the accusations of being nazi. But for the most of it, they did it with very smart remarks. Rammstein would later for example.make the song Links-2-3-4 sounding more nazi than anything else they ever did, but with lyrical declarations of being leftwing.
The originators and also the greatest band ever to master the symbols and how we relate to them is Laibach, who did an electronic version of what Rammstein and Manson do already 10 years earlier. They where the first one to sing in that type of german language, to use march tempo and repetitive patterns, to use uniforms and to associate with symbols. [see picture 2]

But they have done it so brilliantly in different ways that they have been accused both of being right and left wing extremists. The answers they have given in the few interviews they’ve made have also shown absolutely masterly ways of manipulating via media. They also use women in a militant way, playing marching drums on stage, which has gained a lot of tension. [see picture 3]

This video clip is in many ways a big tribute to Laibach, the masters and originators of creating shock publicity via association. I got the idea when I was sitting at the local health center and looked at a big sign with the letter A. It was a huge red square with a big white circle in it and the A was in black. [see picture 4] I immediately associated with the typical Third Reich flag and reflected a bit on how ”passive symbols” like this, a pure surrounding of something are effecting our association. Some time later I was driving my girlfriend to a hospital and noted they had the same thing. [see picture 5 and 6]. So I understood this is how the entire county have the signs at the various health care establishments. Sweden is extremely sensitive to anything that by far chance maybe possibly could be vaguely associated with something radical rightwing (and also have a very generous and including interpretation of what is rightwing). So I was quite puzzled that no politically correct extremist hadn’t made a big deal out of it yet and cried about it in some newspaper (that may sound ridiculous to most of you, but it would be quite a normal thing in Sweden in recent years). Watching a cute nurse in her uniform I couldn’t help my self thinking about Laibach and somewhere here I got the first ideas to the video clip, which women in uniforms and things that would make people make classic Laibach associations.



- Something that I wanted to find out is how different symbols would react together. If we would have made the clip without any breasts or even with marching men instead, the big shock would have been that it’s a ”fascist video”. But add on a couple of breasts and all of a sudden only and few people speaks of the militaristic glorification or totalitarian aesthetics. It’s funny that the modern tolerant western society who (rightly) blame big parts of the muslim world - for forcing their women to look like walking tents out of fear to see parts of their bodies and for being totalitarian - also them selves react harder on seeing a part of women’s bodies than far more dangerous concepts. That was actually a bit of a surprise to me.

5. 性。人类对于乳房的原始冲动。
6. 象征。行军、演说、形似第三帝国的各种元素……
