Matrix Trilogy, As commercial movie as it seems, I have looked at Matrix as a very evangelical movie, After read MEB’s comments, I thought I could use this opportunity to post some of my thoughts regarding the 3 movies, limited to my personal experience, my perspective has heavy doses of Biblical views.
Who is Agent Smith?
Agent Smith was designed initially as a program above programs, his existence has a functional purpose in the Grand Design, which is an “Agent” to maintain the order of Matrix, but he became “free” and became an evil figure. (On the 2nd movie, Agent Smith gave Neo the earpiece). It is equivalent to the Satan who was an Angel, but became a “Falling Angel” (Luke 10:18), and turns to evil, whoever he touches in this world will become him, he is a virus to spread sins and evils among the people, humans as in nature, have no antibody for sins. Remember on 2nd Installment, Agent Smith said, “The good things about being me is --- there are many-me.”
Who is Oracle?
Oracle is more like Pre-Christ era’s prophecies, such as Moses, Joshua or Daniel, they prophesized the Messiah will come to save mankind. Remember Oracle at the end of the 3rd Installment was asked “do you know all this?”, she said, “I didn’t know, but I believed.” This makes all the sense in the world, The reason Joshua could fight the battle of Jericho and delivered the suffering Israelis, not because he knew it, but because he believed it. Faith is all that matters.
Who is Neo?
Neo is the One, (Neo and One have same 3 letters), he is the Savior of Mankind, he is the one who has to fight the ultimately battle for us, and so we can have the grace to be free. Neo is a son of Man, also son of God, he was software engineer, like Jesus who was from a carpenter family. On the 3rd movie, he was blind, but he didn’t walk by sight, he walk by faith (2 Corinthians 5:7).
Also The Wachowski brothers have used many cinematographical lightings to enhance and highlight the spiritual elements related to Neo, such as the pure white background when Neo talk to the Architect in the 2nd movie, and the gold vision when the blind Neo saw in the 3rd movie, noticeably, Neo was walking on waters with ripples (in the gold vision) (John 6:16-21)
The way Neo died, is thrillingly like the way Jesus has died, Neo was nailed (plugged into) in a cross shape. He death and his blood saved Zion, he became the deliverer of mankind by fighting the ultimate battle for us. People in Zion won’t be able to win the war by themselves, Neo did it for them. In the ultimate battle between Neo and Agent Smith, love prevails, love has overcome evil. Love didn’t fail, love will never fail. (1 Corinthian 13:8)
When the little girl asked Oracle at the end of the movie, “Will Neo return one day?” Oracle smiled and said, “I suspect so” (Revelation 19:24 - 20:6)
Who is Trinity?
Trinity is Mary Magdalene, Mary Magdalene is one of the most mysterious biblical females, and her real identity and the story of Holy Grail fascinated many peoples. Christians wouldn’t accept Mary Magdalene was Jesus’ lover, but in this movie, Trinity is Neo’s female ego. Trinity has given Neo endlessly spiritual encouragement, Neo won’t go that far without Trinity.
