Adolescence is one stage of life that comes along with a lot of transition both physically and spiritually. It is in this stage that young adults feel that they are in a position to make their own judgment. Due to their unlimited experience in life sometimes they end up making wrong decisions that comes along with severe consequences such as unplanned pregnancies, being alcoholic and even ending up contracting very dangerous diseases such as HIV /AIDS. At this point in their lives, one can either make or destroy their future (Smith, 2005). A lot of factors can influence the decisions made by adolescents especially when they reach an age that they think they are in a position to make decisions all by themselves. These decisions can be greatly associated with how they are raised right from when they were born. Borrowing from previously conducted research it’s clear that the relationship between parents and adolescent substantially contributes to the level of strength of adolescent convictions and practice.
There are a number of spiritual pathways that adolescents can be able to choose from and embrace when they are separating from parental influence. Parents play a major role in influencing the kind of values and spiritual paths their adolescent children follow. This is so because adolescent children explore their parent’s values and even goes ahead in evaluating and also comparing them with other ideological options. Taking for instance the relationship pathways. Children born and raised in a God fearing family always tend to apply the values that they learn from their parents even when they are no longer under their parent’s influence. When adolescents feel that they are really loved and cared for by their parents, the possibility of them engaging in religiously affiliated commitments just like their parents is very high. They would like to be just like their parents therefore they would do things the way their parents usually do. This includes having the same religious beliefs as their parents.
Another factor that is vital in predicting the kind of path or values that adolescents would have is the nature of relationship among their parents. There are Parents who tend to keep a low profile of their disagreement. They usually find better ways of solving their issues rather than exposing to their children. This basically paints a good picture to the children and it would be natural for them to adapt this kind of behavior from their parents.
Identity statuses is another value system that adolescent chose from when separating from their parental influence. This type of system is common among the adolescent children who had a distant relationship with their parents. You find that in this kind of a system, the adolescents engage in extensive explorations during a crisis period of struggle and also doubt and thereafter develop relatively firm commitments. Many adolescent who perceive this kind of system end up in making decisions that are independent of their parental values or beliefs. They follow what they think is right according to them. This is quite dangerous because as young adults they are not yet in a proper position to make wise decisions on issues affecting their lives. Consequently, some of them end up in making very bad decisions that affect their lives in a negative manner.
According to researchers, adolescent religiosity has been linked with very good outcomes among the young adults. The possibility of religious adolescents to postpone the time that is possibly considered as the right time for sexual engagements is very high as compared to non-religious adolescents. When the time comes that they decide to become sexually active, they are more likely to use condoms for their protection therefore avoiding unplanned teenage pregnancies and also avoid contacting the dangerous diseases that comes with unprotected sex (Smith, 2005). In addition, research shows that those adolescents who often attend religious services and mostly seek Devine interventions through worship and prayers rarely do they indulge in risky behaviors such as such as cigarette smoking, sexual activities, theft just to mention but a few. If it chances that they find themselves indulging in this kind of behavior, they are more likely to quit as compared to their colleagues who are not religious (Bree, Whitmer, & Pickworth, 2004).
Another research that was meant to develop and analyze relationship between adolescent religiosity and drug use found out that adolescent religiosity was a much more powerful protective element for drug use as compared to parenting style. It was also found out than religious adolescents associated themselves with friends who did not use drugs (Granqvist, 2002).
Those adolescents who are firm believers and have very deep faith in spiritual beliefs basically survive and cope up in times of difficulties. They put their faith and trust in God and they believe that they will go through whatever difficulties that come their way. According to Rew & Wong, positive outcomes among the religious adolescents have been directly linked with the manifestations of spiritual beliefs. It has been noted that religious adolescents have positive health outcomes such as, healthier diets, less drug use as well as healthier seatbelt use as compared to adolescents whose lives are not spiritually or religious affiliated (Rew & Wong, 2008).
Adolescent stage is an adventurous stage of life whereby young adults are excited, curious and eager to experiment and explore new things In the process of experimenting new things, adolescents end up participating in risky behaviours that affect their health.Research shows that the present day youngsters are indulging in risky behaviors at a very tender age. It is also emerging that the absolute majority of adolescent's health problems are imputable to risky behaviors rather than biological dysfunction as it may be expected. Communication between nurse practitioners and teenagers can in a big way offer these young adults advice that will help them avoid indulging in risky behavior as much as possible.
In order to effectively influence the adolescents on matters of healthy choices, Adolescents health care providers needs first and foremost to recognize and appreciate the teens' culture. Taking, for instance, the media, you find that most teens spend much of their time with media more than anything else. This heavy media use may cause obesity to some of these adolescents in the sense that they spent time that was meant for other pursuits such as physical activities in media use. Nurse practitioner need to know how much time this teens are spending on media and by doing so he/ she will advise the teens on the disadvantages of that behavior and encourage them not to displace their physical activity time because it is not only important for their physical fit but also it is important in avoiding unnecessary diseases such as obesity.
It is imperative for nurse practitioners to develop listening skills when they are dealing with teens. This makes those teens at ease, and they get the feeling that someone is concerned with their issues. It would, therefore, be easy for those teens to open up and talk about the real issues that affect them. Taking, for instance, a teen who is involved in drug abuse due to peer pressure from his peers. This child would find it more comfortable to discuss the issue with a person who he/ she is free with and in this case, the nurse practitioner. Through that kind of discussion, NP would find the best way to advise the teen on the best way of dealing with that kind of temptation and finally help them solve that problem completely. The same case applies to young female adolescents who, unfortunately, are pregnant. Sometimes when such an incident happen parents tend to sideline their daughters, this only makes things worse. It goes to an extent of them contemplating suicide. This is where understanding NP comes in and shows them that it is not the end of the world. They teach them on how to live healthily and also teach them about ways keeping their unborn babies safe and healthy too.
Adolescence is one phase of life which is very sensitive. Adolescents need lots of care and support from many parties not only the parents, but also people who surround them including health care providers. As I said earlier, it is in this stage of life that either one can make or destroy their future. It is thus critical for all the stakeholders to try and understand adolescents and not condemn them whenever they fall into temptation, it only worsens the situation. Moral and psychological support is essential for these young adults as they go through the transition childhood to adulthood.
