The cameras, they are a-rolling on romantic-comedy sequel Bridget Jones’ Baby, and with Working Title setting up shop in London, England at the beginning of the month, the studio has now slated the film for a nationwide release across the States on September 16, 2016.
Welcoming back both Renée Zellweger and Colin Firth – on board as a pregnant Bridget Jones and on-again, off-again love interest Mark Darcy – the long-awaited new chapter in the cult series is being directed by none other than Sharon Macguire, following her genre-defining work with the beloved 2001 original. Whether she can recapture the charm and blunt humor of Bridget Jones’ Diary is up for question, though Macguire will be working from a script she co-wrote with One Day scribe David Nicholls.
But the question remains: just how is the father of Bridget’s child? Presuming Maguire and Nicholls want to keep the story focused, one would assume that Hugh Grant’s Daniel Cleaver won’t be considered, given that the actor has opted not to be a part of Bridget Jones’ Baby. That leaves Firth’s Mr. Darcy, though bearing in mind that Macguire’s threequel also stars Grey’s Anatomy crooner Patrick Dempsey, we imagine it won’t be that simple.
It’ll be based once again on Helen Fielding’s bestselling book series, and across the previous two entries in the romantic series, Bridget Jones as a franchise has pulled in a respectable $540 million worldwide. No doubt Working Title will be hoping to push that figure as far as it can go come September.

Fielding upset many fans with the 2013 release of Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, when she (spoiler alert) killed off Mark Darcy at the beginning of the novel. It’s unclear if the leading man will survive in the film, or if his scenes are all in flashback format.
