I’m going to introduce to you the great advantages of using a picture compared with words.
When we see a picture, we always get some information from it. But don’t words do the same job? Well, there are quite a lot of differences. In the ancient days, when there were no developed words, people used simple pictures to convey their thoughts and emotions. For example, the frescos in ancient Egypt, which means the wall paintings, show us the life of the ancient Egyptian people in a visual way. We can now infer from these simple pictures the social system, the climate, the way people lived, the dressing style of them, the jobs they did, the tools they invented and much more information about the ancient Egypt. If they applied words to record that information, there must have been a lot of words, and they will never contain all the details we can get from a picture. So we see the two main features of pictures, one is that they are vivid, visual and quite easy and convenient for people to understand, the other is that we don’t get just what it shows in a picture, but also we can employ our ability of imagination and inference to obtain much more information, and that’s why pictures are magic! What’s more, pictures have another advantage, they are not limited to certain languages and nations , which means people from all over the world can communicate by pictures beyond language obstacles. For instance, when a foreigner comes into a Chinese restaurant and he’d like to have some fish without knowing how to say that in Chinese, he only needs to draw a fish on the paper and the servant will know immediately what he wants. In other aspects, pictures act as a special common language in the world, they don’t take words, but they may do a better job than words.
Finally, I’d conclude that pictures are surely superior to words in some certain ways and proper use of pictures brings our lives much more convenience.
