Aidan continues to lead the Exhibit Pack, but seems to be a bit more relaxed than last year at this time. Luna and Boltz may be part of the reason, they will be three years of age in March, 2015 and maturing beyond some of the indiscriminate testing behavior of two year old wolves. Aidan had some medical concerns in 2014 related to his food consumption anddigestion. Initially, we thought it was improved by the addition of probiotics in his diet, but by August, he seemed to have some issues with lethargy as well. We made a decision to immobilize him and take him tothe Veterinary clinic, something we rarely do with dominant wolves (we risk losing their status when removing them from the pack). Fortunately,we found no physical cause of the digestive issue, but a month-long dose of Pepcid AC seemed to improve his physical condition and his activity level. He continues to be very active, frequently greeting all the wolves and continues to maintain a strong bond with his littermate Denali.

Of all the wolves on Exhibit, Aidan displays the most caching behavior. His pattern of burying food resources always involves a pile of untrodden snow, and his face shows the intensity of his task to keep his resources from the rest of the pack.

Aidan is a stoic, quiet, but alert pack leader who doesn’t interfere with the pack dynamics unless he deems it necessary, which isn’t very often. Aidan, Boltz and Luna had a howling session early Saturday morning, awakening the wolf watch group before dawn. The howl seemed to originate with Grizzer as the first howl heard was off in the distance.

The Wolf Watch program is generally offered on the first Friday of each month, allowing participants to join wolf care staff as they observe the pack interactions and record any behavioral data that helps determine pack dynamics.

What is EPTS – in our Ethogram code, EPTS means Ears Pricked and Turned Sideways. This ear posture is usually an indication of tension in the wolf. Most people assume the dominant wolf is always in control and has a carefree life, but there is a lot of research that indicates that high-ranking individuals tend to have higher metabolic rates and higher levels ofcortisol. In our captive facility, Aidan is the only individual wolf withan auto-immune disorder. We have witnessed the impact of aging on our other pack leaders, and some days, Aidan looks much older than Denali.

There’s no shortage of scraps now that spring is arriving. We quickly transitioned from temperatures below zero, to reaching highs in the 50’s. As I write this, we’re forecasted for 60 degree Fahrenheit weather today. With all of the snow caches surfacing, there’s a lot to possess and re-cache. In this week’s photo you can see Aidan investigating a scrap that Luna had hidden in the straw. This straw pile will remain in the enclosure until our Workin’ for Wolves crew comes later this spring to help us clean up (We’ve got a lot ofwork to do!).


尽管春天已至，仍不缺乏残羹。气温很快从零下（<-18℃）攀升到50多度（约10℃）。当我写这篇日志的时候，天气预报显示今天会达到60华氏度（15.5℃）。所有的雪地储藏点都化掉了，狼狼们开始忙着把吃的挖出来再重新藏。在这周的照片中，你可以看到Aidan正在琢磨着Luna原来藏在草垛里的存粮。今年春天晚些时候，我们的狼工作人员会来帮助我们打扫狼舍，在这之前这些草垛都会一直放在围场里。（吐槽：活太多简直累成狗啊！）
