Rudolph the Rescue Reindeer? During World War II, the Soviet mobilised 1,000 reindeer herders and 6,000 reindeer to form the world’s only reindeer battalion. They fought on the Karelian Front, transporting transport food, ammunition, wounded soldiers and downed planes and conducted the only successful major military operation ever undertaken in an Arctic environment in modern warfare.
