Don’t be surprised if the name Rachel Taylor starts popping up all over the place.
The onetime singer with Tacoma, Washington based alt-rockers He Is We has re-emerged as a solo artist and, performing under the name She Is We from her Los Angeles base, Taylor is issuing her debut album, War.
It’s a striking effort, with confessional lyrics cast against bracing, often scorching rock corkers and ballads that frame Taylor’s riot-girl delivery. First single “Boomerang” is catchy as hell even as it sets its unforgiving sights on someone who did Taylor wrong. Elsewhere, Taylor is breathtakingly fragile in her vulnerability and candour. Young fans are bound to fall at her feet.
On the cusp of War’s release, hmv.com chatted with the affable and very funny Taylor about the new album, and why writing straight from the heart can be very empowering.
