Before forming The Libertines, Carl Barat's knowledge of popular music was minimal. Early on Pete Doherty asked Carl to teach him the chords to The Smiths' 'This Charming Man' – but Carl played Blur's 'Charmless Man' instead. He'd never heard of The Smiths.

During The Libertines 2002 'Albion' tour, Carl had to throw away his favourite pair of brogues because one of the support bands, Left Hand, had urinated in them.

Carl Barat and Pete Doherty used to call Libertines bassist John Hassall (pictured far left) "Jesus" when they were on tour because Hassell was a practicing Buddhist and chanted on the bus.

Dirty Pretty Things performed several covers during their time together, including Bob Dylan's 'Subterranean Homesick Blues', 'In Bloom' by Nirvana, 'Oliver's Army' by Elvis Costello and The Paddingtons' 'Panic Attack'. Only very rarely did they ever play any Libertines songs.

At Reading and Leeds festivals in 2006 Dirty Pretty Things drafted in an extra guitarist, The Paddingtons' Josh Hubbard (pictured right). Carl Barat was unable to play guitar on account of a broken collar-bone. He later told NME: “I felt naked without a guitar. I felt like an Irish dancer because I couldn't move my arms."

In the early days of The Libertines Carl Barat and Pete Doherty used to make money by impersonating Irishmen and dancing for tourists in London's Hyde Park. Carl used to call himself "Seamus".

Carl spent much of his youth living on a hippy commune in Somerset with his mother, who supported various counter-culture causes such as the Campaign For Nuclear Disarmament. Presumably this caused friction with Carl's father, who worked in the arms industry. Barat's itinerant upbringing is dealt with in the Dirty Pretty Things song 'Hippy's Son'.

Dirty Pretty Things have enjoyed mixed fortunes in their three years together. Their debut single, 'Bang Bang, You're Dead', reached Number 5 in April 2006. However, second album 'Romance At Short Notice' entered the UK albums chart at number 35 and left it after only two weeks.

In June 2008 Carl was rushed to hospital suffering from stomach pains. He was subsequently diagnosed with acute Pancreatitis. As a result he had to give up alcohol temporarily. In August he said: “When I came out from hospital, I had a few swift halves. But my stomach felt so bad I’ve decided to not have anything since."

Carl Barat has a history of illness. In 2005, he underwent surgery to remove a tumour behind his ear and spent several weeks recovering from the operation. The tumour and resulting surgery left him partially deaf.

Dirty Pretty Things, pictured here with The Enemy, announced yesterday (October 1) that they have split up. Their statement said: "It is with some sadness we announce the farewell of the Dirty Pretty Things. It's been a glorious three years which we all would gladly live out again, but it is time for us to try new things (not The Libertines).

Despite anouncing their split, Dirty Pretty Things have vowed to complete their UK tour, which kicks off in Glasgow on Saturday (October 4). They told NME.COM: "We are reluctant to give up touring but will give the last waltz everything. We have and are determined to go out as we came in, after which we all have other ventures to be getting on with and splendid future plans. Heartfelt thanks to all who made it what it was, much love and we'll see you on the road."

News of Dirty Pretty Things' split has sparked renewed rumours that The Libertines, Carl Barat's former band, are to reform - although Barat explicitly denied that he would be getting back together with Pete Doherty.
