Hey, just wanted to clear a few things up since there have been a few chatlogs and misconceptions going around.
First of all, holy shit you guys blew this way out of proportion. It's true that I am having doubts about how the Afterbirth+ port will happen exactly but I never said it would never happen. We were planning to make it compatible with AB and AB+ right from the beginning (hell, even the site mentions it, go check it out).
Yes we have pride in our work. We've been working on this thing for 2 years, I paid 4000 bucks out of my own pocket to get this soundtrack done, and then an extra 1800 bucks worth of bandwidth on release day due to the massive influx of downloads. We invested a lot into this so I'd say it's only natural for us to be protective of it, even if in the end, it's still a mod for a game that isn't ours. I've had a lot of bad experiences with other programmers so I have trouble trusting them with my code, which is why I'd rather be in charge of the programming if we go official. Being in charge of the programming would mean being hired by Nicalis (at least temporarily), which would most likely mean losing some creative freedom, having to conform to certain standards, and not being able to interact with the community as much. If that's the case, that would be a major deal breaker for us.
A backport is more tempting at this point because we would get to keep the mod in working condition while gradually adding features from AB and AB+ back into it via periodic updates. Even the Lua modding support would be perfectly possible to replicate since Antibirth already has something quite similar (we were planning to have Lua scripting from the beginning but stopped working on it when AB+ was announced), meaning that mods would still be supported, and by extension monthly content updates as well. On top of that, since we would remain fully unofficial, we would be able to experiment around with radical gameplay changes without any limitations. Finally, I would find it a lot more enjoyable than having to rewrite something I've already coded before. Even though Antibirth is coded in C++, it uses a lot of hacks and workarounds that most likely wouldn't apply to AB+, meaning that many of the new items or enemies would need to be completely rewritten.
If done properly, there would be absolutely no visible difference between a backport of AB/AB+ features into Antibirth and a port of Antibirth to AB/AB+. There would be no legal issues either since we wouldn't provide the resource files, meaning that you'd still need the DLCs to get their content loaded into the game. This also means Antibirth wouldn't become an AB+ exclusive, you'd be able to play it regardless of whether you have Rebirth, Afterbirth or Afterbirth+. If you only have Rebirth, only the Rebirth content would be loaded, and so on.
In the end though, none of this is set in stone yet. We are in good terms with Edmund and we are still waiting for Tyrone to elaborate on how an official port might happen. It's true that I think the Void is an underwhelming final floor and stepped out of line as an initial reaction, and I apologize for that, we don't want to be hating on anyone here, we really appreciate the support for Antibirth so far, and we definitely don't want to disappoint.
