Abstract: In modern movie field which is filled with commerce and acrobatics, Shunji Iwai miraculously finds out his own position in the sandwitches of art and commerce, and causes the hot discussion of aesthetics of Shunji. This thesis tries to clarify the extremely aesthetic frames and the artistic achievement in the building of characters in Shunji’s movies, especially in Fireworks, Love Letter, Shigatsu Monogatari and All about Lily Chou-Chou. This thesis mainly studies the movie Love Letter, illustrates the director’s understanding of death and life, and explores the visibility, connotation and literary meaning of Shunji’s movies through the discussion of the plot carrier in movie Love Letter.
