Reading is a common activity. In the cartoon on the left, a man, collapsing in a chair with legs crossed, is excessively proud of the mass of books he owns, yet he never reads. On the right, another man is reminding himself of his goal of reading 20 books this year. The caption reads "'Having Books' and 'Reading books'". I believe that the cartoonist is trying to highlight the idea that the point of having books is to read them.
It is noticeable that as people's disposable income has increased over the past few decades, more and more young people are now able to afford to buy numerous books, in order to establish their own libraries. However, if these book collectors seldom read the books they accumulate ,they do not acquire any useful knowledge. By contrast, if people draw up a feasible reading plan as does the man in the right picture, they may gain a lot.
As college students, we should have a pragmatic approach, reading books that can add to our knowledge and broaden our horizons. One author said that "A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, but the man who never reads lives only one." I strongly believe that by reading, we may open our eyes to other viewpoints and experiences, which will benefit not only ourselves, but also our society.
