Argentina, in the middle fifties. Sulamitis the daughter of German-Jewish refugees. Friedrich is the son of German-Nazisrefugees. Both children are closely friends as times goes by between the fallof Peron's Government in 1955 and the years of prison, torture and death inArgentina since 1976 to 1983. The children grow up and go to Germany, both getinvolved in the political struggles of 1968 and Friedrich, who always rejectedthe Nazi past of his father, becomes a left winged militant and decides to comeback to Argentina to fight against the Military Government. The love of Sulamitfor Friedrich survives all these years, though he dedicates more time to hispolitical commitments than to his personal feelings. But those two are destinedto get together after all these years of separation and disagreements, becausetheir love is more powerful than anything else.

Alex learns quickly that the ideals of equality, democracy andhuman dignity are just propaganda. And he understands that rather thanprotecting the GDR from the western capitalist enemy, the border is there toprevent the own population from fleeing the country. The question what happensif someone emerges in the sight of the kalashnikow engages the soldiers day andnight. In all this desperation Alex meets a girl, CHRISTINE: tractor-driver,self-confident and inaccessible at first. The two get close. It is Alex' firstlove. Christine encourages him not to follow his father's expectations but tofulfill his dream of becoming a photographer. But then Christine'*s brotherKNUT uses one of Alexander's photographs of the border installations for anoppositional campaign and things get out of control. Christine asks Alex to lether brother cross the border because Knut is persecuted by the state security.Reluctantly Alex agrees. But when Knut arrives at the specified border point,he is not alone - next to him is Christine. Alex is faced with the toughestdecision in his life...
