Two years later Matthew decided to leave California and moved to New York, he enrolled at Tisch School of the Arts and later graduated from that school in 2002. While in Manhattan he walked the runways for some of the biggest fashion designers such as Marc Jacobs, Burrberry, Louis Vuitton, Tommy Hilfiger and Sisley when Barbara Pfister whose a fashion designer for Vanity Fair and other popular fashion magazines discovered him and later casted him for a "Royal Tenenbaums"-type family layout for Kate Spade which ran in fashion magazines including Vanity Fair in the fall that same year. Matthew was interning for Wes Anderson at the same time he did the modeling gig, Wes encouraged him to audition for a part in his movie "The Life Aquatic" he did and was casted as 'Intern #1' (later named Nico the Intern).
