1 The criminal must be someone mentioned in the early part of the story, but must not be anyone whose thoughts the reader has been allowed to follow.罪犯必须是故事开始时出现过的人，但不得是读者可以追踪其思想的人。
2 All supernatural or preternatural agencies are ruled out as a matter of course.侦探不能用超自然的或怪异的侦探方法
3 Not more than one secret room or passage is allowable.犯罪现场不能有超过一个秘密房间或通道
4 No hitherto undiscovered poisons may be used, nor any appliance which will need a long scientific explanation at the end.作案时候，不能使用尚未发明的毒药，或需要进行深奥的科学解释的装置
5 No Chinaman must figure in the story.不准有中国人出现在故事里(备注1)
6 No accident must ever help the detective, nor must he ever have an unaccountable intuition which proves to be right.侦探不得用偶然事件或不负责任的直觉来侦破案件
7 The detective must not himself commit the crime.侦探不得成为罪犯
8 The detective must not light on any clues which are not instantly produced for the inspection of the reader.侦探不得根据小说中未向读者提示过的线索破案
9 The stupid friend of the detective, the Watson, must not conceal any thoughts which pass through his mind; his intelligence must be slightly, but very slightly, below that of the average reader.侦探的笨蛋朋友，比如华生，必须将其判断毫无保留地告诉读者，此人的智力须轻微低于读者的平均水平。
10 Twin brothers, and doubles generally, must not appear unless we have been duly prepared for them.小说中如果有双胞胎或长相极为相似的人时，必须提前告诉读者
*备注1 说一下，诺克斯十戒第五条并不存在歧视或者妖魔化。事实上，诺克斯十戒第五条和第二条并不相同，并不是为了排除超自然现象。诺克斯也没认为亚洲人有什么奇异的能力。诺克斯十戒第五条想表达的意思是：“不准有武林高手出现在故事里。”第五条是为了避免出现下面这样的情况：假定一个被害者被砸碎头颅而死，却始终找不到凶器。铺垫了一大堆到最后却告诉你凶手其实是个练家子，徒手把人脑袋砸了。或者，被害人心脏突然停止而没有其它外伤，最后却告诉你是被人近距离以寸拳击中心窝。 这两种情况都不是超现实的东西，练过的人的确是可以徒手砸碎椰子壳（人头颅和椰子壳强度类似），寸拳（也被称为死拳）也的确可以瞬间让心脏停搏致死。但是，这种现实本身就和秘密通道一样是一种对读者的作弊行为，因为读者并不会去考虑这种作者不说就不可能知道的可能性。
