Hello guys, this is Rocky. Today I’m gonna share something about “Online courses”.
For:
1. The vast popularity of MOOCs(Massive Open Online Courses) can be explained by the fact that people are finding it easier to learn this way. The best feature of online learning is that it can be done in the privacy of one's home, which is more convenient than having to move cities or even countries for a university degree. Moreover, online courses are inherently more flexible. Lectures can be watched and tests taken at any time a person wants.
2. Traditional Universities are forced to spend a lot on administration and facilities, such as renting and maintaining buildings, providing student support for accommodation, etc. All these costs can be cut or abandoned all together if universities move to online teaching. There would be no need for lecture halls and student accommodation as students would just work from home.
Against:
1. With online courses, unlike with actual tests and lectures, there is no way to ensure the person is not cheating on the other side of the screen. There is no way to ensure that essays and papers are written by people who will be getting degrees.
2. Online courses impair live communication between students and professors and among students and due to pre-recorded lectures, there is no option of asking professors questions and no live class discussions.
练习:
Do you think online courses will replace courses in classrooms?
Well, I’m not so sure about that, but I guess in the long run it will happen. We can already see the vast popularity of Moocs because their courses are inherently flexible and diversified meanwhile online courses can also help institutes cut some expenditures in renting and maintaining buildings, but there’s one thing that I may concern, which is the impairing of live communication between students and professors and they also lose the chance of becoming friends with each other.
