Firstly,analysis of the teaching material. This lesson is from the speaking andlistening part of section A, Unit 1 of PEP junior middle school English book 2.Themain topic is “abilities and joining a club” which is close to the students’daily life. The usage of the modal verb “can” is main point of the lesson. Throughthis lesson , students can talk about their abilities freely.
Secondly, analysisof the students, as for the students of Grade 7, they have the basic ability ofEnglish study, and they have learned the what question last semester. They arecurious about new knowledge, most of them are very cooperative, but too shy toexpress themselves in English.
Thirdly, analysisof the teaching aims.
1.Knowledge objects
Students can grasp the new words, phrasesand the usage of modal verb “can”. Students'listening and speaking ability can be improved after class. They can applythese words into the sentence pattern by repeated practice and learn to talkabout their abilities freely in English.
2. Abilityobjects
(1) Todevelop the students’ abilities of listening, speaking.
(2) To trainthe students’ ability of working in pairs.
(3) Todevelop the students’ abilities of communication by learning the usefulstructures.
3. Moralobjects
(1) Throughdifferent teaching methods to make students be interested in study.
(2) Love toknow more knowledge about abilities and dare to express their opinions inEnglish.
According tothe analysis above, I set the main points and difficult points as thefollowings. Develop students’ listening and speaking abilities. Enable studentsto master the structure and usage of the modal verb can.
I would like to talk about the teaching andlearning methods. According to the Teaching Aims and the feature of mystudents, Communicative Approach, Game Teaching Method and Task-based TeachingMethod will be adopted. The students can learn this lesson by imitation, cooperationand exploration.
Now, let’smove to the most important part of this lesson: the analysis of the teachingprocedures.
Step1:Lead-in.
At thebeginning of this lesson, after greetings , I will invite some students to giveus the talent show to encourage them to learn some talents. Then, elicit thetitle “Unit 1 Can you play the guitar ? ”
Step 2:presentation
Now, let’sfocus on Task 1 Learn the new words and phrases. I will use the PPT to show somepictures of abilities, which I took from their daily life. Now elicit the newwords: guitar, play the guitar, swim, play chess, tell story, speak English,and so on. After that I will give the students 2 minutes to remember the newwords and phrases and have a memory competition, which is an effective way oflearning. Then finish 1 a.
Task 2 Learnthe new structures
I will use the pictures of myself to askstudents “Look, I can play chess, can you play chess” lead them to say “ Yes, Ican.” Or “No, I can’t.” Then use anotherpicture “I can swim, Can she swim?” “Yes, she can. No, she can’t.” Then use another picture “I can run, Can they run?” “Yes, they can. No, they can’t.” Then practicethese sentences in pair. To practice more, I will invite one student to standin front of the class, he can choose one card without looking at it, the otherswill ask “what can you do?” he will guess the answer. The class atmosphere canbe activated by the game. Then finish 1b.
Now the students can master the sentences. So,I will give them some tips and 3 minutes to discuss in groups, try to find theusage of “can” by cooperation and communication. I will guide them when theyhave some troubles.
Step3 listeningpractice
pre-listening,I will teach the name of some clubs and ask “I can swim, I want to join theswimming club. What club do you want to join? Lead Ss to answer: I want to join the music club.
Then practiceby pair-work and show 3groups.
While-listening.I will play the tap 3 times. First time, students just listen and try to getthe main points. Second time, listen and finish 2 a. Third time, read thesentences as fast as they can, then listen to the tap for the third time and finish2 b. Check the answer.
Post-listening,we will prepare for the last activity in this lesson. In order to achieve thegoal of knowledge into abilities, help students to use the words and structuresin communication, I create a situation about “clubs recruitment”, students canrole-play and make up a conversation by groups.
Next, step 4 Summary and Home work
At the end ofthe class, ask the students such questions:What have we learned from thislesson? What can you do? What club do you want to join? What new phrases havewe learned today? Do you have enough confidence to finish these exercises? Now,let’s try! Then show them some exercises and help them to finish them. Atlast, tell the students what today’s homework is.
