炼金术是以“等价交换”为原则，将物质分析，离解再重构的一种世界最先端的学术。然而，它有一个最大的“禁忌”，即人体炼成。因为思念逝去的母亲，年幼的兄弟触犯“禁忌”，失去了一切。从此，弟弟阿尔丰斯•艾尔利克的灵魂附着在巨大的盔甲上，而哥哥爱德华•艾尔利克则背负起“钢之炼金术士”的称号被束缚在钢铁盔甲的诅咒之中。为了夺回失去的一切，兄弟两人踏上了寻找“贤者之石”的旅程。却不想越接近“贤者之石”，离阴谋的漩涡亦越近。在暗处操纵一切的存在，渐渐显露本性的军事帝国，久经磨难只余憎恶和复仇之念的民众，炼金术造成的几多悲剧，这一切的一切交错成一张密布的织网，将民众和国家卷入了覆灭的深渊。在希望与绝望的夹缝之中，兄弟两人寻找着出路……
