R & B is an abbreviation of the term Rhythm & Blues, which was coined by the great Jerry Wexler who just died last week. It replaced the term "race music". Rhythm and Blues incorporated elements of Gospel, Blues, Jazz, and even Country. It can be argued that R & B is what Rock & Roll was called when it was played by blacks. R & B means very little today, just like Country,Rock & Roll, Punk and most other terms that used to describe specific forms of music.
Blues is primarily a vocal music that describes pain, joy, and all the emotions in between. It has changed over the last hundred years, but is still readily identifiable as blues.
