To an Athlete Dying Young
By A.E.Housman
The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.
Today, the road all runners come,
Shoulder-high we bring you home,
And set you at your threshold down,
Townsman of a stiller town.
Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay,
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose.
Eyes the shady night has shut
Cannot see the record cut,
And silence sounds no worse than cheers
After earth has stopped the ears.
Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out,
Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man.
So set, before its echoes fade,
The fleet foot on the sill of shade,
And hold to the low lintel up
The still-defended challenge-cup.
And round that early-laurelled head
Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead,
And find unwithered on its curls
The garland briefer than a girl’s.

A.E. To an Athlete Dying Young, 《致一位早逝的运动员》。

After earth has stopped the ears:

              And round that early-laurelled head
Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead,

The time you won your town the race
                We chaired you through the market-place; 我们用椅抬你穿过闹市;
Man and boy stood cheering by, 父老乡亲站立为你喝彩,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.
Today, the road all runners come, 今天所有参赛者来到路上,
Shoulder-high we bring you home,
And set you at your threshold down, 把你放在那入口之处,
Townsman of a stiller town.
Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay,
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose.
Eyes the shady night has shut
Cannot see the record cut,
And silence sounds no worse than cheers
After earth has stopped the ears.
Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out, 那些恃誉恋栈不去之徒,
                Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man.
So set, before its echoes fade,
The fleet foot on the sill of shade,
And hold to the low lintel up 向着低矮的梁楣,
                The still-defended challenge-cup.
And round that early-laurelled head
Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead,
And find unwithered on its curls
                The garland briefer than a girl’s.

                    1. Man and boy stood cheering by.
                    2. And early though the laurel grows,It withers quicker than the rose.
                    3. Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out,
                    Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man.
My in-laws have worn out their welcome. The coach has worn out his players.

还有这句:“early-laurelled head Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead”,从语法上看,是前者early-laurelled head凝视后者the strengthless dead,而后者是那个已逝的运动员,那么前者是谁?

Eyes the shady night has shut

After earth has stopped the ears.
Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out,

                          The still-defended challenge-cup.
                          And round that early-laurelled head
Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead,
And find unwithered on its curls
The garland briefer than a girl’s.

man and boy一般翻译成 "从小”“一贯” I've been doing this job for 50 years, man and boy.
我认为这里用man and boy 而不是men and boys
                              men and boy 指的是人数, 大家,
