这个故事最初源于圣经，邪恶的王后想杀死先知约翰，却一直得不到国王的同意。在国王生日那天，王后与前夫所生的女儿莎乐美为国王献上了七重纱之舞，国王开心之下，答应赐给莎乐美任何她所要求的宝物。在王后的示意下，莎乐美要求国王给她先知约翰的头颅，于是，圣徒就这样死在了一个舞蹈下。这个故事在王尔德的笔下变成了极端的单恋故事，国王迷恋着公主，而公主却狂热的爱恋着圣徒，但是当然，圣徒只爱上帝。于是，公主莎乐美演绎出一幕“就算杀死你，也要得到你”的戏码来，国王不给她约翰的头，她就不跳舞！最后，她如愿以偿，却在痴痴吻着先知的头颅时死在了国王的惩罚下。
