Which is more important for students, to understand concepts or to learn facts?
Such a question will often pose in front of us, especially teachers and students: which is more important for students, to understand concepts or to learn facts? The answer of this question depends on our own experience and life style. In my point of view, to understand concepts is as important as, if not more important than to learn facts. As a high school student, I can say it unequivocally.
First and foremost, if a student has understood a concept, he will be able to conclude all the facts which based on it on his own. This means one concept equal a number of facts. We may take two friends of mine, Jack and Bill, for example. Jack is a comparatively assiduous student in our class. He spends hours to recite every single fact in the text book so that he can get a high mark in the tests. On the contrary, Bill never painstakingly recites any fact. He just gets through the concept several times until he can totally understand the concept. In this way, Bill get the same high score as Jack, spending much less time and being more relaxed.
Furthermore, all the people regard it as a general truth that, the ultimate aim of education is to instill the knowledge into children, not the rigid facts. Compared to the students who is good at reciting facts, those who can use the concept freely will be surely more acceptable by the society, for they are flexible with their comprehension of concept, that is to say, knowledge. That is the reason why Chinese students find it harder to get a job than American student although they have a higher score. Many international companies prefer those who truly understand the concept to those who just can tell the facts. It is seemingly that an understood concept is hundreds times useful than one or even more facts,
In summary, I intend to stand on the side that to understand a concept is more essential to the students. It can not only help you to get high score easily but also make you flexible in you career. I do believe an increasing number of people will stand on the same side as me in the future.
