Rose Bowl Parade
So I hope all of you watched the Parade of Roses on New Years day, but if not here's a link:
The experience was one of the best of my life! Budweiser certainly knows how to sponsor an event! At first I was a little nervous because I'm not a big drinker, but a cold beer after being on your feet all day is definitely the best way to recharge.?
We were so busy that I almost forgot that it was New Years Eve! I was up at 4:15AM New Years Eve, went to bed at 11PM (hey! I made til midnight mountain time), and woke up at 5:20AM the next morning to get ready for the parade! So there wasn't much time to ring in the new year, but I haven't overlooked the fact that this is the year we've all been waiting for! 2010 is here. 33 days until the competition I've been training for all my life.
So, back to the float! It was beautiful! All the floats were. I met a couple from IL who fly into Pasadena every year to volunteer to help build floats. They were wearing Illini t-shirts. Bless their hearts! You've gotta love real fans, even if our football team is awful! But they told me that it can take 300 workers an entire week to build one float! But one thing I didn't realize about the floats is that even though every part of them is covered in something living, that living thing can be ground to a dust and used to decorate the more intricate things. Like most of the platforms people were standing on were a piece of float with ground up flower dust sprinkled on top. And a lot of the signs written were actually little seeds or beans, glued to the float, using tweezers one at a time! But nothing is allowed to be painted. All these floats were amazing to see. Especially when the sun was out and the flowers really bloomed!
The game was great too, but the best part about the trip was meeting all the Team USA athletes. Shannon Barhke, Rebecca Sorenson, Steve Fisher, Marco Sullivan, and Steve Holcomb were all on the float with me as Olympic Hopefuls, as well as former Olympians Bonnie Blair, Dan Jansen, and Michelle Kwan.
It was the first opportunity I've had to see what it's like to become a part of Team USA. The Olympic Movement is so much bigger than me and my results at the Games. It's about coming together as athletes to represent our countries, and coming together as countries to unite the world. That's what I look forward to the most.
