August is the eighth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. Its name comes from Augustus Caesar, the first Roman emperor. In Latin, August means "great" or "venerable". It is also sometimes referred to as "the harvest month" because of its position in the growing season between summer and autumn. August is usually a hot and humid month in much of the Northern Hemisphere, although temperatures can vary greatly depending on location. In many countries, August marks the start of a new school year or university term.
