Fabio Aurelio believes his decision to switch to the No.6 shirt is symbolic of his desire to embark upon a fresh start as a Liverpool player.
The Brazilian full-back has opted to give up the No.12 shirt he wore prior to re-signing for the club back in July and now hopes to make his mark as a regular starter in Roy Hodgson's new regime.
"I don't think it feels like a new signing for the other players but for me it is like a new beginning," Aurelio told Liverpoolfc.tv.
"I am at the same club but I wanted to change my number because I wanted to start everything afresh. Hopefully we can do much better this season.
"I had previously chosen 12 because my two children were born on the 12th. But now it is like a new beginning and I want the No. 6 because it is one I used to wear when I was back in Brazil."
Aurelio made just 23 appearances last term after suffering a number of frustrating injuries.
However, he is confident the 10-11 campaign will be different.
"When you are in a top side like Liverpool you will always have competition for your place," he said.
"I know they are looking for another full back but if I can concentrate on my job and do well, hopefully that can convince the boss that I can be the first choice."
He added: "I am thankful to the manager that I am back here. He wanted me to come back and now I want to repay him on the pitch, where I hope to be for most of the time this season."
