06-Feb-2011 Fed Cup: Nastia’s Big Day
Russia came back from a 2-0 first-day deficit with three victories on Sunday to eliminate France and book a place in the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas semifinals .
Nastia posted a vital 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Alize Cornet in the first of the reverse singles matches, which kept Russia in the first round tie. Kuznetsova then made it 2-2 when she beat Virginie Razzano 6-4, 6-4 to send the quarterfinal to the decisive doubles. Next, Anastasia teamed up with Svetlana Kuznetsova to end France’s dreams by defeating Julie Coin and Alize Cornet 7-6(4), 6-0 in one hour and 19 minutes.
"I am really happy that I managed to help Russia get this victory," said Nastia. "I would like to say a big thank you to Svetlana. We had never played doubles together before, which might explain why we had a few problems at the beginning," the 19-year-old added. "But things became easier as the match went on, and I think that was reflected by the scoreline in the second set."
Russia now looks forward to another home tie against defending champions Italy in April’s semifinal.
